3¢ brown trial colour plate proof with SPECIMEN overprinted in red diagonally reading upward.The text is 2.5 mm in height, 18.5 mm in length including period.
This is most likely a post-contempory specimen, printed shortly after the amalgamation of the National, Continental, and the American Bank Note Co. Proof impressions were taken from various plates, and overprinted "SPECIMEN" in sans serif capitals.
