Lesson Three: Ecology, Technology and the Individual

Extension Sites

The Three Ecologies:

Can we separate ourselves from each other and from our natural environments?

The pollution from our engines have caused global warming, science has failed to stop the spread of AIDS, industrial greed has led to the over fishing of the oceans, booming markets first in beef and now in soybeans is resulting in the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. These are a few examples of how our ecologies relate. Can you think of others?

Brainstorm other issues that show the interconnectedness of our ecologies.

Choose one, find out something about it through a web search, and prepare a brief one paragraph description of the problem and how the different ecologies interact to create this problem.

Add this description to the class wiki page titled, “Ecologies”

Technology, Art and Political Action

The Critical Art Ensemble is a collective of five multi-media artists who “explore the intersection between art, technology, critical theory and political activism”

Surf their site. Explore their works, especially the biotechnology section. Remember, these are artistic works.

What are their subjectivities? What is their critical stance? Do you agree or disagree?
