Painting the Taste
-Meghan Kim
When I first started to paint “delicious painting series”, my goal was to paint the taste, not only the actual sense of taste but also the visual and pictorial taste in art. Just like everyone tastes of same food differently, it applies same for the esthetic judgments of art. Everyone has a different taste for looking at a piece of art.
Greatly influenced by Cubistic ideas, it is my personal taste to choose geometric elements to build up a new image or break down an image to form a new image. Instead of focusing on specific objects or ideas to paint, I normally choose a theme or subjects that interest me and set up a motif to paint for a certain period of the time and move on. Sometimes I do make series. Delicious painting project is one of them. What I try to achieve is the consistent taste. It is not the image I paint but the picturesque style that makes my paintings recognizable as my own.
Simple, geometric, abstract, contrast, solid, structured, graphic, colour harmony, puzzling, futuristic, illusionary space and modern; all these words describe what I paint. However, modernity is not the ultimate answer. Once a more shocking and newer idea comes out, what is modern may not be modern anymore. Perhaps modernity is just the desire to seek for something special because the taste changes and evolves.
