The Brigus South Website

Brigus South is a small, scenic fishing community. For this reason it was the site of a TV series and a movie.

Pigeon Inlet (TV series) -

Based on the the famous Ted Russell stories this series was shot on location in Brigus South because of the small quaintness the community gave.  Also Brigus South contained many houses, many of which were used in the show, that resembled the ones from the time when Russell wrote these enjoyable stories.  About 20 episodes were filmed and starred many Newfoundland actors as well as several people in the community.

 Welcome to Canada (movie) -

This National Film Board of Canada movie was based on the 1986 incident in which Southeast Asians illegally landed in Canada.  Directed by John N. Smith (Dangerous Minds, The Boys of St. Vincent) "Welcome to Canada" chronicles the illegal landing of a boatload of Sri Lanken Tamils, who are rescued by a group of fishermen and housed by the locals.  The movie was shot during the winter of 1987 and starred the entire community of Brigus South as well as several Sri lankin Tamils that were in the 1986 incident.  The winter scenery was  perfect to provide for the harsh isolation of the opening scenes to the beautiful day of the final scenes.  "Welcome to Canada" was acclaimed by critics for its raw honesty and received several nominations for awards, including a Genie nomination for best director.
