Wales... An Introduction To... Wales...

Croeso i/Welcome to : Diwylliant Gymraeg/Welsh Culture

This page yields no financial profit. Created from whimsy, it's grown exponentially over the past few years.
The "process" gave plenty of insight about my homeland. Any gain made, is through personal satisfaction, & the knowledge that anyone, who sees this page, will realise, history & tradition aside, Wales is definitely part of the 21st Century.

Number of signatures, for the return of the
Madog plaque, grew to well over 1200. The campaigners are now on to the next level to push for it's reinstatement.
Update: The plaque is now out of storage, getting a clean up & will be placed in front of the DAR property in Mobile for public viewing.
The aim now is to create a riverfront park in Mobile, for the plaque to have a permannent home. There'll be no further approach to the Alabama Legislature. Fundraising for the park continues....

To be born Welsh, is to be born privileged.

LLANGUNNOR HILL

Upon the glittering stream behold,
Those fishermen, of courage bold,
In numerous pairs, pursue their trade,
In coracles, themselves have made;
Formed of slight twigs with flannel cas'd,
O'er which three coats of tar are plac'd.
And (as a porter bears his pack)
Each mounts his vessel on his back.

~An ode to the coracle fishers, 1794

A few examples of (many) Welsh Quotes

The Welsh are Italians in the rain - ???

Without perseverance talent is a barren bed.

The Welsh are all actors. It's only the bad ones who become professional - Richard Burton

He that would be leader must be a bridge.

The more I know about Wales, the more I am aware that I live in a country entirely populated by perverts - Dylan Thomas

Reason is the wise man's guide, example the fool's.

There are still parts of Wales where the only concession to gaiety is a striped shroud - Gwyn Thomas

"History has remembered the kings and warriors, because they destroyed; Art has remembered the people, because they created” - William Morris

And now, from famed American wit: "Names are not always what they seem. The common Welsh name Bzjxxllwcq is pronounced Jackson." - Mark Twain

Talk (Leek) Soup: Welsh clichés have been purposefully avoided because, wonderful as they are, there's more to Wales than castles, male voice choirs & rugby.

This page continually grows & changes. Sincere thanks to those who've introduced me to new & interesting sites.

The Lord's Prayer In Welsh

'Ein Tad': The Lord's Prayer in Welsh by Vera Law, 1923

National Anthem

Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,
Tros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed.

Chorus

Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.

Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn i'm golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
Ei nentydd, afonydd, i mi.

Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad tan ei droed,
Mae hen iaith y Cymry mor fyw ag erioed.
Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,
Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.

Mawddach
