For you guys with AODs: The AOD is a unique (being
generous here) design. The input shaft is a two piece affair with a
small inner shaft and a larger outer shaft. 1-2 transmits power through
the outer shaft. 3rd splits the torque, unequally, to both shafts, and
4th runs through just the center shaft. The TC has a hydraulic lockup
actuator and 3-4 are both locked, so there is no slippage in 3rd and
4th. The AOD would tow like a manual in this regard. The problem is the
center shaft is the weaker of the two. OD runs all torque through it,
so fatigue MAY be a problem.
I tow in OD when the engine can pull it. With 33's
and 3.55's, I figure I'm not making a lot of torque at OD RPM anyway,
but you guys who tow in the owerband may. BTW, I have a 5.8L. I like to
downshift before a hill so that the 3rd clutches don't have to take a
shift at nearly WOT. Just my $.02.

Well here is the list of upgrades (at least what I remember) when I got
my AOD bebuilt.
-Wide ratio gearset
-HD one-way clutch
-HD clutch plates
-Type "A" OD servo
-Wider OD band
