Neighbourhoods

In Year 1, Common Ground initiated and supported a pilot mapping project in James Bay. Maps were made by schools and groups on community values and historic land use, particularly First Nations. The James Bay Mapping  Initiative is focusing on using mapping to revise the neighbourhood plan and enhance the neighbourhood centre while continuing to document local land use and history, including interviewing neighbourhood elders.

Saanich neighborhoods also mapped their community values and cherished places for community mapping day.

In Year 2, Common Ground supported a new neighbourhood initiative in Fairfield -- "Our FairFields". Fairfield will map its unique characteristics in a process designed to foster participatory community development, integrated community planning and documentation of community history. Saanich created its own map poster as a compilation of its neighbourhood and community map-making projects.

This year Common Ground will continue to outreach to regional neighbourhoods and support and develop new mapping projects.
