POSITION STATEMENT ON THE ISSUE OF ABORTION
Pro Life Politics
Make Life Your Choice !!
Our position in regard to the Sanctity of life is well known.
Section 6.3, subsection 1 and 2 of policy document
leaves no doubt that we uphold the right to life from conception till natural death. CHP has championed its position to the Government in a detailed brief in response to Bill C-43, and has in addition stated its policy unequivocally in several subsequent media releases.
We affirm that the issue of abortion is not, and never was a woman's issue. Instead it is an issue which affects us all, our very survival as a Nation, our ability to take care of one another and our ability to compete. We concur that the effects of abortion are most intensely felt by women. Their bodies are the shelter of new life, until it is able to spring forth and begin its own journey.
In addressing this issue, CHP does not minimize the specific needs of women, neither does it ignore the duty of each and every individual and the collective duty of society. We concur that Pro Life legislation will by itself not stop abortions, instead a 'Samaritan approach' to this problem is needed and a change in personal and public attitude is essential to make abortions ultimately cease. CHP seeks to provide compassionate alternatives to the horror of abortion with this program called: "MAKE LIFE YOUR CHOICE".
CHP has summarized this program as follows:
- In addition to passing "Sanctity Of Life Legislation" Government on all levels must spearhead a public education campaign to: MAKE LIFE YOUR CHOICE. Children at an early age must be made aware that human life is precious and that every one has a personal duty to treat it with respect and dignity at every stage of development.
- Concerted efforts must be made by all citizens, churches and organizations concerned with life to provide alternatives to abortion and to make life preserving options so widely known that the choice to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is no longer considered.
- The present practice of funding abortions under the guise of public health care must be stopped. Pregnancy is a health issue while abortion is not. Public funds now used to pay for abortions should instead be allocated to agencies such as "Birthright" to provide counselling and assistance to persons facing the trauma of unwanted pregnancies and post-abortion syndrome.
- Every baby is a wanted baby, though not necessarily by the natural parents. Many couples are eagerly waiting to adopt children and nurture them. Adoption, therefore, must receive primary attention as a viable alternative to abortion. The duty to give conceived life the opportunity to develop in a secure and loving environment provided by adoptive parents must supersede any legal provision to terminate a pregnancy by abortion.
- CHP supports a program whereby citizens would be encouraged to make their homes available as "LIFE HOMES" by displaying a distinct emblem. This emblem would indicate that help is available at such homes to people emotionally distraught, due to an unwanted pregnancy or suffering the consequences of an abortion.
- CHP would try to persuade businesses and organizations to include a "LIFE HOME" emblem in their advertising, indicating their support for local, provincial and national efforts to preserve human life from conception. Stationary, postage stamps and bumper stickers would also be used to convey the message as to the vital importance of motherhood and family life to the overall well-being of our Nation.
With a concerted effort by each citizen, displaying love in action, Canada will become once more a God fearing and child loving Nation - a model for the rest of the world to follow. In this endeavor the Christian Heritage Party wants to play a leadership role.
