Practicum Program
Participants in CJI’s practicum program have the opportunity to gain significant work experience mediating “minor” criminal offences referred to the agency’s Victim-Offender Reconciliation
Program (VORP). All case work takes place in the municipalities of Delta, Surrey, White Rock and
Langley (Canada). Because of CJI’s commitment to ensuring a quality experience and significant case work, only one practicum student is accepted at any one time.
The program has three basic components: training and assessment, supervised case work, and independent case work. Before undertaking independent case work, participants must meet the minimum requirements of undergoing a training assessment, observing an actual VORP mediation, and completing a supervised assessment mediation. Staff will not assign independent cases until satisfied that the participant is well prepared.
Individuals who successfully complete the practicum program receive one of three levels of mediator certification from CJI. The levels are based on the amount of mediation experience gained and the competency demonstrated, as determined by CJI staff.
APPLICANT CRITERIA
Potential practicum candidates must meet one of the following criteria:
 | be a student in a relevant course of study at a university or college (eg. criminology, psychology, sociology, social work, counselling, etc.) |
 | have completed the Justice Institute of BC’s certificate program in conflict resolution, and have successfully passed
the JI’s assessment process. |
 | have equivalent training or life experience deemed applicable by CJI training staff
(eg. prior experience in victim-offender mediation). |
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
To successfully complete the practicum program, participants must be able to:
 | complete 20-45 hours of training and assessment by CJI staff, depending on the applicant’s prior training and experience. |
 | complete 172 hours of combined training and case work within a four-month period. |
 | be available for a minimum of ten hours per week (including daytime hours) during the four-month practicum period. |
 | be available to work out of the CJI Langley office to the greatest degree possible in order to enhance training and staff contact. |
 | interact with CJI staff on a regular basis for case input and attend regular meetings with the staff and the practicum supervisor. |
PRACTICUM FEES
Program Fee: $550 (CAD) payable upon acceptance into the practicum program.
Refund Policy: There is a $150 (CAD) non-refundable administration fee. Once classroom training has begun (prior to completion of classroom training assessment),
a refund of $275 will be granted upon request. No refunds are granted after work experience has begun.
