At the border crossing of Nelway, turn west and head into the Pend d' Oreille country. If you have a high clearance 4 X 4, and don't mind two rather tippy sections, you can pass right through to the Waneta Dam. Otherwise, the road (?) is blocked at either end.
The trip offers grand views of the river and the valley. At the Salmo River bridge you can put-in with a canoe / kayak. Depending on the level of the river, a larger boat could be launched as well. This offers a cautious paddle out into the main river or a leisurely look up the back flooded Salmo River. These images are from this area, taken in the summer of 1999.
