SALMO - CRESTON SKYWAY MOUNTAIN SHEEP

As you pass over the Salmo - Creston Skyway, you occasionally see Mountain Sheep on the highway. If you knew where to look, you might see a herd of 24 sheep waiting patiently for the volunteers to deliver hay and pellets.

Approximately fifteen years ago, a dedicated group of volunteers without any assistance from the Province, began a program of providing the sheep with winter food. The financial assistance available comes from several groups and donors. In January 2001, the herd is comprised of 6 rams, 11 ewes and 7 lambs. This quantity of lambs is wonderful as some years there has only been one. When we accompanied the volunteers to the feeding site, the sheep were wary of close approach but unafraid of the humans.

Jack Floyd, pictured below, is one of the original volunteers from fifteen years ago. At 77 he is still very active.
