- Except where indicated, the information on Alvin Clifford
and family is from the biography of Alvin H. Clifford, MD, that was
originally in The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Kentucky, 30 May
1901, and reprinted 19 September 1981 by the Grant County, Kentucky,
Historical Society. The Overton's Hill charge was one of the last
battles of the Civil War and was part of the Franklin-Nashville
Campaign. The fighting started on 15 December 1864, and the next day
part of the Union forces, our Alvin undoubtedly amongst them, made the
charge up Overton's Hill (Davidson County, Tennessee), but were
initially repelled by the Confederate forces of General John Bell Hood.
However, a second attempt of General George H. Thomas against the
exhausted Confederate troops fortifying the Hill was successful, and
Hood's army withdrew from the area.
