17. GEORGE4 BEAVERS ( Ann3 Clifford, George2, unknown Clifford1); born 31 May 1757; died 2 September 1820; married SARAH LANNING; born 1 November 1760; died 15 March 1841; buried in "New Stone cemetery, near Clinton, New Jersey." 289 Sarah was a daughter of Ralph and Elizabeth (Jones) Lanning of Lawrenceville, Mercer County, New Jersey. Sarah's siblings were Elizabeth Lanning (married Elijah Hendrickson), Samuel Lanning, Joseph Lanning, Mary Lanning (married Joshua Reed), Abigail Lanning, and Joshua Lanning. 290
Hunterdon Democrat (Flemington, New Jersey), volume 3, number 31, 31 March 1841: 291
On the 15th inst., Mrs. Sarah Beavers, age about 80 years. Long may the Bethlehem Church, of which she was a worthy communicant, remember she was a liberal supporter, and her large family descendants, her many lessons of instruction, and prayers for the present, and eternal happiness.
The funeral services of the above were performed by their affectionate pastor, Rev. H. W, Hunt.
According to Early Germans of New Jersey, George Beavers: "owned Pattenburgh (sic) Mill, now known as Beaver's Mill
" Probably our George Beavers was the George Beavers taxed in Alexandria Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, in 1785 and 1786 and in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County, in 1789 and 1790. 292 George Beavers was in the Revolutionary War, being a Commissary of Supplies for Sussex County, New Jersey. 293

19. MARY4 BEAVERS ( Ann3 Clifford, George2, unknown Clifford1); probably born circa 1755-1760 (an estimate) in New Jersey; died 1826 in Lewis County, Virginia (now West Virginia); 302 married ALEXANDER WHITE (II); born 4 June 1752; died 1814-1815 in present-day West Virginia. 303 Both Mary and Alexander have been reported buried in Jacksons Mills, Lewis County, West Virginia. 304 Is this Jackson's Mill, Lewis County, the boyhood home of Thomas Jonathan (Stonewall) Jackson?
Sönn (1948) speculates that Mary Beavers married (first) [-?-] Clifford and (second) Alexander White. From Sönn (1948), pages 11: "
Mary Beavers first married a Clifford, first name not known but presumed to be related as a son or nephew of George Clifford [#2] whose will Col. Beavers drew up in 1757 a few weeks before George died
." I can not suggest a nephew, but of course we do not have a complete genealogy of our early Cliffords. Nevertheless, the premise in my account is that Mary (Beavers) White did not first marry a Clifford.
Sönn (1948), page 134, mentions in the settlement papers of Colonel Beavers that Stephen Gano paid "Mary White" $505.16 in full settlement of her legacy on 2 November 1818. Seven years later, 1 March 1825, he paid $100 to Henry White [son of Mary] of Virginia "on account of his mother's legacy;" and then 3 weeks later, 22 March 1825, he paid an additional $150 to Henry White, attorney for Mary White of Lewis County, Virginia. In Mary (Beavers) White's will, 305 recorded 20 July 1826, she gives all the money that is coming from "my father's estate to my sons
" 306
Sönn (1948), page 135, apparently citing Roscoe White's (1939) "White family records," 1939 (updated by Arden White), states that Alexander and wife Mary went to Virginia some time before 1790, being induced to go by Alexander's brother Samuel White. According to Hardy County, Virginia (now West Virginia), Deed Book 2, page 182, Alexander purchased land from the Thomas Fairfax estate on 4 December 1790 (he sold the land to a John Bay on 11 October 1797). Starting in 1798 and until his death in 1814, Alexander's name appeared on the "list of tithabels" of Harrison County, Virginia, now Lewis County, West Virginia, near Jackson's Mill. 307
More on the Whites of Sussex County, New Jersey, and Hardy County, West Virginia, and a possible Mayflower connection
Alexander White (I) was born 8 September 1709, possibly in Yarmouth, Massachusetts; 308 died circa September 1776 in Greenwich Township, Sussex County (now Warren County), New Jersey; 309 he married 21 March 1736 Mary McMurtrie, born 11 April 1711 in Sussex County, New Jersey; 310 her date of death is not known. Alexander probably married (second) Mary Clifford, widow of George Clifford (#2). See under George Clifford for evidence of this marriage.
When Alexander White's will was written 40 years after marrying Mary McMurtrie, only six children (Alexander, Mary, Prudence, Elizabeth, Samuel and Sarah) were mentioned, with Samuel and Sarah not yet 21 (see Appendix 2. "Last will and testament of Alexander White" for the entire will). Could Alexander have had a first wife, or as suggested earlier, could the Mary White mentioned as his wife in his will have been a second wife-"the widow spinster Clifford." 311
Children of Alexander and Mary (McMurtrie) White (not necessarily all in order of birth): 312
(1). William White. 313 He married Martha Matilda Mason. William was not mentioned as an heir in his father's will, although William did not die until 1792. 314 However, a William White, probably his son, was one of the executors of Alexander's will.
(2). Alexander White (II), married Mary Beavers, see #19.
(3). Mary White. It has been suggested that she was the Mary White, first wife of Joseph Beavers. However Mary, listed as "Mary White," daughter of Alexander (I), was mentioned in her father's will written 1776 (with no indication she was deceased); 315 by this time the first wife of Joseph Beavers would have been dead for several years. Sönn (1948), page 10, suggests that the Mary White, first wife of Joseph Beavers, might have been a sister instead of a daughter of Alexander White (I). Alexander (I) apparently did have a half-sister Mary White, but this Mary White married James Russell. 316
(4). Prudence White; born before 1756; still alive in 1803; married (tentative) James Clifford. See under James Clifford (#7) for details.
(5). Elizabeth White.
(6). Samuel White; born 16 March 1758 in Sussex County, New Jersey; died late 1841 in Franklin Township, Franklin County, Ohio; married 4 April 1780 in Sussex County, New Jersey, Jane Stewart (daughter of James and Eleanor [-?-] Stewart), born 23 January 1764 in New Jersey; died 24 January 1849 in Franklin Township. 317 Samuel was "at Camp" and not yet 21 when his father's will was written in 1776. 318 On 29 September 1832, Samuel applied for a pension, having been in the Revolutionary War. 319 The pension application gives his birth as 16 March 1758 in Sussex County, New Jersey, and states that after the War, he lived in Sussex County, New Jersey, for 5 years; in Hardy County, present-day West Virginia, for 18 years, and in 1805 moved to Franklin County, Ohio.
Children of Samuel and Jane (Stewart) White (information obtained too late to recalculate all generation numbers):
a. Margaret White; born 29 April 1782 in Sussex County, New Jersey; died young.
b. James Stewart White; born 11 November 1783 in Sussex County, New Jersey.
c. Samuel M. White; born 21 September 1785 in Sussex County, New Jersey; died 11 February 1845 in Franklin County, Ohio. He married Nancy Ballenger (Ballinger?); one of their children was Mary White, who married Alexander White (#332), a son of William Wellington and Rachel (Paxton) White; hence Mary and Alexander were second cousins.
d. John McDowell White; born 17 March 1787 in Hardy County, Virginia (present-day West Virginia); died 17 November 1833 in Franklin County, Ohio.
e. Sarah White (twin); born 1 February 1789 in Hardy County; died 4 January 1849 in Franklin County, Ohio.
f. Elizabeth White (twin); born 1 February 1789 in Hardy County; died 5 October 1854 in Franklin County, Ohio.
g. Mary White; born 17 January 1791 in Hardy County, Virginia.
h. Alexander White; born 2 July 1792 in Hardy County, Virginia.
i. William White; born 16 April 1794 in Hardy County, Virginia; died 19 January 1854 in Franklin County, Ohio.
j. Rebecca White; born 26 July 1798 in Hardy County, Virginia; died 10 February 1859 in Franklin County, Ohio.
k. Jacob White; born 17 May 1804 in Hardy County, died 19 January 1872 in Franklin County, Ohio; married Eliza Alkire, who was a daughter of Emanuel and Sarah (White) Alkire, see #77.
l. George W. White; born 27 July 1807 in Franklin County, Ohio; died 1894 in Franklin County, Ohio; married Mary Baltimore.
(7). Sarah White; not yet 18 when her father's will was written in 1776; 320 that is, born no earlier than 1759. If Sarah's mother was born in 1711, she would have been age 48 or older when Sarah was born. Sarah White married Abner Calkins. 321
There apparently were other children of Alexander and Mary (McMurtrie) White not mentioned in Alexander's will, namely, Peregrine White, Henry White, and John White. 322
What about the ancestors of Alexander White (I)? His parents might have been Jonathan White, born 4 June 1658 in East Mansfield, Massachusetts, 323 died 22 February 1736 in Yarmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts; and Elizabeth Margaret (Marjorie) Alexander, born 18 January 1670, died 12 April 1718 in Massachusetts. 324 However Sönn (1948), pages 11 and 135, suggests Alexander's father was a Thomas White who built the Whitehall mansion in Sussex County (now Warren County), New Jersey. For more information on Whitehall Whites of New Jersey and more roadblocks into understanding the Cliffords-Beavers-Whites relations, see under Helen Permelia Frees (#139).
There is some evidence, although not conclusive, that Alexander White's (I) parents were Jonathan and Elizabeth Margaret (Alexander) White. Besides Alexander White, other children of Jonathan and Elizabeth Margaret (Alexander) White were William White, Martha White, and Elizabeth White (a second Elizabeth, daughter of Jonathan White?). 325 The question is: was this Jonathan White the Jonathan who first married Hester (Nickerson) White, and therefore was the Jonathan White, direct descendant of William White who came to North America on the Mayflower. 326 For a sixteenth century Alexander White "associated" with Mayflower, see end note #326.
William White (died circa 1621-1622) and his pregnant wife Susanna [-?-] and son Resolved White, born circa 1615 (married, first, Judith Vassall; married, second, Widow Abigail Lord), came to North America on the Mayflower. 327 William and Susanna's son Peregrine White was born December 1620 on the Mayflower, while the ship was at anchor off Cape Cod. He was the first child of Mayflower passengers to be born in North America. He died July 1704 in Massachusetts. Peregrine White married Sarah Bassett, who died circa 1710-1712 in Massachusetts. Peregrine and Sarah had six children: (1) Mercy White (married William Sherman), (2) Silvanus White, (3) Daniel White (married Hannah Hunt), (4) Sarah White (married Thomas Young), (5) Jonathan White (see below), and (6) Peregrine White (married, first, Susanna [-?-]; married, second, Mary [-?-]).
Jonathan White, fifth child of Peregrine and Sarah White, was born 4 June 1658 in Marshfield, Massachusetts; died 14 July 1736 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts; he married February 1681 or 1683 Hester Nickerson, born October 16 1656 in Yarmouth, died 8 February 1702 or 1703 in Yarmouth. By Hester, Jonathan White had seven children: (1) Elizabeth White, died after July 1736, probably did not marry; (2) Jonathan White (married Dorcas Hamlin); (3) Ebenezer White (married Mary Smith); (4) Ester White (married [-?-] Drake); (5) Sarah White; (6) Mary White (married James Russell); and (7) Joseph White, born 1702, married Lydia Baker.
Some but not all White Mayflower genealogies, and with no connection to our Alexander White (I) line, mention a second wife of Jonathan White: Elizabeth [-?-], who died 12 April 1718 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, but these genealogies do not mention issue of Jonathan and Elizabeth. Was this Elizabeth the Elizabeth Margaret (Marjorie) Alexander who married Jonathan White and had son Alexander White (I). White workers believe so and therefore claim descent from William White of the Mayflower. Roscoe White (see #336) who did much of the early White genealogy work and had access to White bible records, submitted his records to The Mayflower Society for authentication, but the Society would not accept his documentation-not necessarily that the lineage was not correct. 328
The events needed for authentication happened many years ago, and it is doubtful that an original source will turn up now stating that Alexander White's father was Jonathan of direct Mayflower descent. But there is evidence for this being the case: (1) the bible records (but these apparently were composites from several bibles; no specific bible was named; 329 (2) the name Peregrine (not a common name) being listed in some White genealogies as a descendant of Alexander White; (3) the knowledge that Jonathan lived for over 30 years after his first wife, Hester, died; and (4) the "fact" that Jonathan of Mayflower descent did have a second wife Elizabeth [-?-]. Even though a formal authentication by a Mayflower organization will probably never be forthcoming, descendants of Alexander White have a cogent claim to Mayflower descent. Specific to our Clifford-line, these would be descendants of Mary (Beavers) White (#19) and Prudence (White) Clifford (#7).
However, there is one major stumbling block. Jonathan White of Mayflower descent did leave a will, written 14 July 1736, recorded 22 February 1737. 330 In the will, Jonathan White, yeoman of Yarmouth, mentions only his children by wife Hester (Nickerson) White: that is, eldest son Jonathan, third son Joseph, son Ebenezer, daughter Elizabeth White (single), daughters Ester Drake, Sarah White and Mary Russell, and grandson Jonathan Dell (he was a son of Mary White Russell). 331 Witnesses were John Jones, John Eldredge and Thomas Smith. It is hard to believe that Jonathan would have issue (namely Alexander, William, and Martha) by a second wife and not remember any of them in his will. We know that Alexander White (I) was alive when Jonathan White's will was written in 1737.

MARTHA4 BEAVERS ( Ann3 Clifford, George2, unknown Clifford1); born February or March 1769; died 2 February 1820; married RICHARD GANO; born 3 March 1764; died 28 October 1851. 359 Both Martha and Richard are buried in Greenwich Presbyterian Cemetery, 360 Greenwich Township, Warren County, New Jersey.
Richard was a brother of Stephen Gano who married Martha's sister Catherine Beavers. Their parents were William and Sarah (Green) Gano of Hunterdon County, New Jersey. 361 These Ganos were "descendants of Francis Gayneaux, a Huguenot who escaped the massacre in France." 362 In 1850, Richard and apparently daughter Ann, enumerated as Nancy, born circa 1798, were living in Alexandria Township, Hunterdon County , New Jersey. 363
Except where indicated, information on Richard and Martha (Beavers) Gano and their descendants is from "Descendants of Martha Gano," email report, 2004, by John Newman, who descends from Charles and Salome (Mettler) Gano (#114). John cites census records, cemetery records, New Jersey State Archive Death Records, death certificates, obituaries, and the will of Richard Gano and Charles Gano.
