61. RALPH5 BEAVERS (George4 Beavers, Ann3 Clifford, George2, unknown Clifford1); born 3 December 1781 in Sussex County, New Jersey; died 31 March 1863; married CHRISTIANNA DILTS; born 16 April 1786; died 3 March 1863.723

In 1850, Ralph and Christianna were living in Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, where Ralph was listed as a farmer.724 Also in household in 1850 was their married daughter Elizabeth Starker and her child Sarah C. Starker. Also in the household was Sherwood Beavers, born 22 May 1828 in New Jersey, died 10 July 1910 and his wife Keziah Shaw (Moore) Beavers, born 27 July 1828, died 28 January 1918 in New Jersey. This census item can be confusing, because Sherwood (full name Ebenezer Sherwood Beavers) was actually a son of Ralph and Christiana's daughter Naomi (Beavers) Byran. Sherwood chose to keep his mother's maiden name.725

Starker were living in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, with Elizabeth's parents.727 In 1880, Richard Philhower (head of household), and wife Elizabeth were living by themselves in High Bridge Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey (dwelling 95, family 119, page 308C). Children of Archibald and Elizabeth (Beavers) Starker: (1) Louisa Starker (married, first, James Fritts, married, second, Nelson Roland), (2) Sarah Catherine Starker (married Smith Clark), (3) John Starker (married Elizabeth Force), (4) Joseph Starker, (5) Thisby Ann Starker; born 18 July 1832 in High Bridge, New Jersey; died 26 June 1918 in Iowa; married, first, Holloway Whitfield Struble, a Civil War veteran of the Union Army, who died of his wounds; married, second, March 1875, Benjamin Mowder; died 1920 in Iowa; children of Holloway and Thisby Ann Struble (all born in Clinton Township, New Jersey): (a) John Struble, born 1853; (b) Jacob Struble, born 1855; (c) Sarah Louisa Struble, born 11 March 1856; (d) Alfred Struble, born 1859; and Charolette Struble (information on Thisby Ann Starker and her family was generously provided by Grace Lillian Rosenberger Helms, whose grandmother was Sarah Louisa (Struble) Van Horn; (6) Mahala Starker (married John Swick).

  293 vi. Catherine Beavers; born 19 October 1815; died February 1900; married, 9 April 1837,729 Jacob Dernberger Fritts; born 4 January 1808; died 6 August 1880. Jacob D. Fritts was a son of George C. and Anna Mary (Dernberger) Fritts. Jacob's sister Rachel Fritts married Peter A. Beavers (#62), who was a first cousin of Catherine (Beavers) Fritts. Children of Jacob and Catherine (Beavers) Fritts: (1) Sarah (Adaline) Fritts (married Noah Sharp Tiger), (2) Ralph Beavers Fritts (married Mary Jane Lair), (3) Isaiah Fritts (married Rachel Ann Stout), and (4) George Fritts ("December 31 [1867], by Rev. C. C. Winans, George Fritts of Clinton, to Mary E. Smith, of Bethlehem").730
  294 vii. Mahala Beavers; born 29 November 1817; died 9 April 1885; married (first), 14 April 1838,731 William (James?) H. Plum; born 20 March 1817; died 28 May 1884; married, (second) Abe Cozatt (no issue); born 1822; died 1892; after Mahala died, Abe Cozatt married Margaret Ann Jones Fritts, widow of Ambrose Fritts (#304). In 1880, James Plum, wife Mahala and James's brother Charles Plum were living in High Bridge Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, where James was enumerated as a farmer (page 17A, dwelling 153, family 185) Children of William (James?)  and first wife Mahala (Beavers) Plum: (1) Elizabeth Plum (married Abraham Banghart Fritts), (2) Christiana B. Plum (married George Stintsman), and (3) Joseph Plum.732



62. ANNA5 (NANCY) BEAVERS (George4 Beavers, Ann3 Clifford, George2, unknown Clifford1); born 17 September 1783; died 10 December 1861; married BENJAMIN FRITTS; born 5 or 11 November 1781; died 29 September 1861; buried in Old Spruce Run Lutheran Church Cemetery (Hunterdon County?, New Jersey).733

Benjamin was a son of Frederick Fritts (born 1759 in ?New Jersey) and Rachel (Steyments) Fritts (born in New Jersey, a daughter of Benjamin Casparus Steyments), and a grandson of Frederick Fritts (born 11 November 1732 in Germany, died 10 May 1816) and Cornelia (Jewell) Fritts.734 Benjamin had a sister, Margaret, who married Henry I. Hofman. Harold Sönn (see #1664) descends from these Fritts, and they are extensively treated in Sönn (1948), pages 62-78.

In 1850, Benjamin, enumerated as a farmer, and Anna were living in Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.735 In 1880, Anna, widow, was living by herself and next door to her nephew George Beavers in Lebanon County, Hunterdon County.736

JOSEPH5 BEAVERS (George4 Beavers, Ann3 Clifford, George2, unknown Clifford1); born 8 August 1787 (but see birth date of Joseph's sister Elizabeth); died 11 June 1845; married, 4 January 1812,740 NANCY COOK; born 18 May 1794; died 27 January 1875.741 In 1850, Nancy was living with her son William C. Beaver and family in Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

(4) Marshall Bruner, born circa 1840, married Melissa [—?—], born circa 1849 in Illinois. Marshall and family lived in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois in 1870 (page 119), where Marshall was enumerated as a carpenter, and in Chicago, Illinois in 1880 (listed as a corn traveler, page 63), 1900 (listed as a salesman, page 9B), and 1910 (listed as a scale builder, page 4A). Children of Marshall and Melissa known from the federal censuses (both born in Illinois): (i) Carrie Bruner, born circa 1873; and (ii) Maud B. Bruner, born circa 1876; married William Eden, born circa 1864 in Indiana. Maud and William lived in Chicago, Illinois, where William was a bank executive. Known child was William M. Eden, Jr., born circa 1904 in Illinois—by 1930, William, Jr., was living by himself in the Maryland Hotel, Chicago, where he was enumerated as a bank auditor (page 6A). In 1930, William, Sr., was also living by himself in the Maryland Hotel, still a banking executive. Maud in 1930 was living in Champaign, Illinois (page 7B).

In 1850, William (enumerated as a farmer), Mary and children (1) George Beavers, born circa 1841 in New Jersey, and (2) Abigail Beavers, born circa 1845 in New Jersey, were living in Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey;744 also in the household in 1850 was William's mother, Nancy, as "Naney."
  310 v. George Beavers; born 2 November 1821; died 16 July 1890; married Mary Banghart, a cousin of the Mary A. Banghart who married William C. Beavers. Mary was born 11 April 1823; died January 1896 or January 1906. In 1850 and 1880, George and family were living in Lebanon Township, Hunterdon County, where George was enumerated as a farmer in 1850 and a laborer in 1880.745 Their children reported in the 1850 and 1880 federal censuses (all born in New Jersey): (1) Martha Beavers, born circa 1843; (2) Eliza Beavers, born circa 1845; (3) Joseph Beavers, born circa 1847; (4) Jacob Beavers, born circa 1849; (5) Cassie (Katherine) Beavers, born circa 1853, listed as a milliner in 1880; (6) William Beavers, born circa 1855, listed as a laborer in 1880; (7) Abraham Beavers, born circa 1860; and (8) Laura Beavers, born circa 1865. Sönn (1948), page 81, also lists children (9) Sarah Beavers, born 1849; and (10) Nancy Beavers, born 1851. Living by herself and next door to George and Mary Beavers in 1880 was Anna Fritts, born circa 1784 in New Jersey.746 She would have been George's aunt, see #62.



65. MARY5 (POLLY) BEAVERS (George4 Beavers, Ann3 Clifford, George2, unknown Clifford1); born 22 May 1789; died 20 November 1871; she married, 24 August 1811, JOHN CARHART of Jefferson County, Virginia, on 24 August 1810;747 he was born 15 October 1786; died 21 March 1872 "at his late residence near Perryville."748 He was a son of Charles and Mary (Dunham) Carhart.749

In 1850, John, with real estate valued at $20,000, Mary and daughter Mary Carhart were living in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.750 In 1860, they were in Union Township (which was set off from Bethlehem Township in 1853), Hunterdon County.751

Albert Williams, Mr. Charles Carhart, of Bethlehem to Matilda, daughter of Mr. Adams Stiger of Clinton."753 Matilda Stiger was born 8 October 1814; died 22 July 1864. Charles Carhart married (second) Emily Mattison; born 23 October 1822 in New Jersey; died 22 July 1892 (no issue). In 1850, Charles, first wife Matilda and children Mary, George and Sarah were living in Bethlehem Township (probably a part that became Union Township), Hunterdon County. In 1860, Charles, Matilda and daughter, Mary E. Carhart, were living in Union Township, Hunterdon County New Jersey. In 1880, Charles and second wife Emily were in Union Township, Hunterdon County; in all censuses, Charles was listed as a farmer.754 Children of Charles and first wife Matilda (Stiger) Carhart: (1) Mary E. (Libby) Carhart, born circa 1843, married David Randolph Kenyon; (2) George B. Carhart (died young); (3) Sarah V. Carhart (died young); and (4) James D. Carhart (died young).
  313 iii. James Dunham Carhart; born 2 May 1815; died 23 March 1879; married Sarah Virginia Curd. Their children were (1) James Duncan Carhart, Jr., married Fannie Rockwell; (2) William E. Carhart, married Augusta Richards; (3) Mary Louise Carhart, married Julius W. Lewis; and (4) Henry Brigham Carhart (married Emma Dorothea Albers.
  314 iv. Martha B. Carhart; born 5 July 1818 in New Jersey; died 15 February 1905; married James Scott Kels; born 8 October 1816 in New Jersey; died 15 December 1872. In 1880, Martha, widow, was living with her married son William Kels and his family in Union Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Children of James and Martha Kels: (1) Mary Catherine Kels, married Joseph Bird; (2) Georgianna Bills Kels, married Joseph Bird-I do not know the relation between this Joseph Bird and the Joseph Bird who married Georgianna's sister Mary Catherine; and (3) William Whitfield Kels, born circa 1848 in New Jersey, married Frances Arabella Aller (enumerated as Belle in 1880), born circa 1854 in New Jersey. In 1880, the family, including William's mother, Martha, was living in Union Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.755 Children reported in the 1880 federal census (all born in New Jersey): Harvey (or Larry?) Kels, born circa 1876; and George Kels, born circa 1879.
  315 v. William Beavers Carhart; born 22 October 1820. He would have been the William B. Carhart, born circa 1830 in New Jersey, who in 1880, as "uncle," was living in the household of his nephew William E. Carhart in Brooklyn, New York. As was his nephew, William was also listed as a grocer. No information on a family.
  316 vi. Whitefield Dunham Carhart; born 23 January 1825; died 29 August 1873; married Mary E Rockafeller; born 28 February 1843; died 26 February 1897. In 1860, Whitfield (with $40,000 in real estate) and Mary (no children) were living two dwellings from Whitfield's parents.756 In 1880, Mary E., widow, was head of household in Union Township, Hunterdon County, with all children except John; also in the household was Mary's mother, Ester Rockefeller, born circa 1809 in New Jersey.757 Children of Whitfield and Mary (Rockafeller) Carhart (all born in New Jersey): (1) John B. Lamar Carhart (died in infancy), (2) William B. Carhart, born circa 1865, married Mary Alice Carnes; (3) James Dunham Carhart, born circa 1866, married Genevieve Acee; (4) George B. Carhart, born circa 1869, died August 1883 (see below); and (5) Whitfield D. Carhart (Jr.), born circa 1871, married Leila Price.

From Hunterdon Democrat (Flemington, New Jersey), 14 August 1883:758

A Terrible Accident
Last Saturday morning a 15-year-old son of the late Whitfield D. Carhart, deceased, living near High Bridge, attempted to climb upon a moving coal train on the Central Railroad. In so doing he slipped and fell upon the track, the train passing over his leg, mangling it in a horrible manner. The leg was amputated, and an earnest effort made to save the lad's life, but it was of no avail. On Sunday he died [name of the son not given, he would have been George B. Carhart].

  317 vii. Elijah H. Carhart; born 11 August 1827 in New Jersey; died 22 March 1885 in Georgia. Apparently he did not marry. In 1880, Elijah, merchant, was living as a boarder in  Macon, Georgia. Another boarder was Elijah's nephew John C. Van Syckel (see next).759

From Hunterdon Democrat (Flemington, New Jersey), 31 March 1885:760

Mr. Elijah H. Carhart, who left the northern part of this county years ago to establish a business in Macon, Ga., died on Sunday, 22d inst., at that place of paralysis. He had been in failing health for several weeks, but his death was not so soon expected. His remains were brought to Clinton for burial by his business partner and nephew, Mr. J. [John] C. Van Syckle [his father, Sylvester, married Elijah's sister Mary E. Carhart], and Mr. W. [William] B. Carhart, a nephew in his employ. The funeral services took place at the residence of D. S. Van Syckel, his brother-in-law, on Thursday, and the remains were interred in the Presbyterian Cemetery. [A similar obituary in the Atlanta Constitution, 23 March 1885, reported Elijah started in the hardware business in Macon, Georgia in 1841.]

  318 vi. Mary E. Carhart; born 17 July 1829 in New Jersey; died February 1917; married Sylvester Van Syckel; born 1826 in New Jersey; died 6 December 1906. In 1880, Sylvester, Mary and children William and Larmar were living in Union Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, where Sylvester was enumerated as a physician.761 Their children (all born in New Jersey): (1) John C. Van Syckel, born circa 1857, married Margaret Hemans Acee, a daughter of Fielding Wallace Acee, who was a Confederate officer from Georgia;762 as indicated above John C. was a business partner of his uncle Elijah Carhart in Georgia; (2) George Van Syckel; (3) Chester Van Syckel; (4) William Carhart Van Syckel, born circa 1863 married Eliza Waterman; and (5) Lamar Van Syckel, born circa 1867, married Marie Hiltz.



69. SAMUEL5 BEAVERS (George4 Beavers, Ann3 Clifford, George2, unknown Clifford1); born 19 September 1799; died 19 July 1858; married AMY SNYDER; born 20 July 1805; died 13 October 1856.763

In 1850, Samuel, Amy, and family were living in Bethlehem Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey.764

The family lived in Washington Township, Morris County, New Jersey, where John was a farmer in 1860 (census page 295, 1870 (page 544), 1880 (page 442), and 1900 (page 4b), when John and Emeline were living alone. Their children known from the federal censuses (all born in New Jersey): (1) Rebecca Jane Beavers, born circa 1857; (2) Elijah W. Beavers, born circa 1859; (3) Georgiana Beavers, born circa 1863; (4) Margaret E. Beavers, born 1865; (5) Ulysses Beavers, born circa 1867; (6) William E. Beavers, born circa 1870; and (8) Samuel M. Beavers, born circa 1875.
  321 iii. Lydia Beavers; born circa 1835 in New Jersey; married Lambert Smith; born circa 1834 in New Jersey: On the 2nd of February [1854], near Clinton, by Rev. J. G. Williamson, Mr. L. K. Smith, and Miss Lydia W. Beavers, all of this county” [Warren County]. In 1880 Lambert, Lydia, and family were living in Union Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Their children reported in the 1880 census (all born in New Jersey) were (1) Charles Smith, born circa 1861; (2) Ellie Smith, born circa 1865; (3) Martha Smith, born circa 1865; (4) Etta Smith, born circa 1876 (a gap of 10 years between Martha and Etta?); and (5) Louisa Smith, born circa 1880.
  322 iv. Martha Beavers; born circa 1837 in New Jersey; married 21 November 1858 William H. Cole; born circa 1844 in New Jersey. In 1880, William, Martha and daughters Lizzie and Emma were living in Union Township, Hunterdon Count, where William was enumerated as a miller. Their children reported in the 1880 federal census were (1) Lizzie Cole, born circa 1861 in New Jersey; and (2) Emma Cole, born circa 1862 in New Jersey.1880.
  323 v. Abigail (Abby) Beavers; born 1841 in New Jersey; married Hiram Hoffman; born circa 1839 in New Jersey. In 1870, Hiram and family were living in Clinton Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, where Hiram was enumerated as a farmer. ALEXANDER5 WHITE (Mary4 Beavers, Ann3 Clifford, George2, unknown Clifford1); born in Sussex County, New Jersey; married JANE ANDERSON on 12 May 1806; she was born 1789, either in New Jersey,771 or Virginia, as reported in the 1850 federal census. In 1850, Jane, widow, was living by herself in Wood County, Virginia.772

According to "Anderson family information,"773 Jane (Jennie, Jency) Anderson was a daughter of Peter and Agnes [-?-] Anderson; and she was born after 1789? in Ohio County, Virginia (present-day West Virginia) and died after 1850 in Wood County, Virginia (present-day West Virginia). Jane (Anderson) White's brother Edward Anderson married Elizabeth Staats and had son Michael Staats Anderson who married Prudence White (#341), a child of George Beavers and Rebecca (Jackson) White (#78).

In 1880, a Barney O'Neal, born circa 1808 in Virginia (his father was reported born in Ireland and his mother in Maryland), was living in La Salle County, Illinois, where Barney was enumerated as a farmer.775 He was living with Mary [-?-]; born circa 1816 in Ohio (his second wife?) and children Barney O'Neal, born circa 1859 in Illinois, and Asa O'Neal, born circa 1861 in Illinois.
  326 ii. (tentative) Harriet White; born in Wood County; died September 1843; married 3 December 1834, George Washington Flinn (?Flynn).
  327 iii. Alexander White; born in Wood County.
  328 iv. [-?-] White.
  329 v. (tentative) Mary Catherine White; born after 1812; died after 1900; married (first), 27 December 1827, Robert Flynn (?Flinn); died before 1850 in Wood County; married (second), after 1850, Albert Congrove.
  330 vi. Nancy White; born 16 November 1820 in Wood County, Virginia, died 13 January 1849 in Wood County.

WILLIAM5 WELLINGTON WHITE (Mary4 Beavers, Ann3 Clifford, George2, unknown Clifford1); born 4 February 1783 in Sussex County (probably a part that is now in present-day Warren County) New Jersey; died 29 January 1842 in Virginia (a part that became West Virginia); married RACHEL PAXTON (also spelled Paxon); born March 1789 in New Jersey.776 In 1850, Rachel was living with her son-in-law Thomas Morris and his children in Lewis County, Virginia.

In 1850, Phillip, Mary and family were living in Lewis County, Virginia, where Phillip was enumerated as a farmer.777 Others listed in the household in 1850, all presumed to be children (all born in Virginia): (1) John Nicholas, born circa 1833; (2) Granville Nicholas, born circa 1835; (3) George Nicholas, born circa 1837; (4) Alexander Nicholas, born circa 1840; (5) Isaac Nicholas (male), born circa 1842; (6) Sarah R. Nicholas, born circa 1844; (7) Vievanna? Nicholas (male), born circa 1846; and (8) Mary Nicholas, born circa 1849. One other child of Philip and Mary was (9) (first born) William Nicholas.778
  334 iv. George Beavers White; born circa 1812 in Lewis County, Virginia; married Margaret Nicholas; born circa 1813 in Virginia. In 1850, George, Margaret and children were living in Lewis County, Virginia, where George was enumerated as a farmer.779 Also in the household in 1850 was a Rachael White, born circa 1832 in Virginia. Others listed in the household in 1850, all presumed to be children (all born in Virginia): (1) Weeden White, born circa 1834; (2) John White; born circa 1841; (3) Rachel White, born circa 1844; (4) Isabel White, born circa 1846; (5) Nancy White, born circa 1847; and (6) Mary White, born circa 1850. Others reported to be children of George and Margaret (Nicholas) White (not necessarily in order of birth) were (7) George Washington White, (8) Susan White, (9) Margaret White, (10) Prudence White, and Betty White.780
  335 v. Prudence White; born 10 July 1814 in Lewis County, Virginia; she was probably deceased by the time of the 1850 federal census; married Thomas S. Morris; born circa 1807 in Virginia. In 1850, Thomas and children were living in Lewis County, Virginia, where Thomas was listed as a carpenter.781 Also with the family in 1850, was Prudence's mother, Rachel White. Children of Thomas and Prudence (White) Morris listed in the 1850 federal census (all born in Kentucky): (1) Adeline Morris, born circa 1842; (2) Mary Morris, born circa 1843; (3) Rebecca Morris, born circa 1845; (4) Richard Morris, born circa 1846; and (5) Sarah Morris, born circa 1848. Others reported to be children of Thomas and Prudence (not necessarily in order of birth): (6) Rachel Morris, (7) Elizabeth Morris, and (8) Susan Morris.782

After the death of Prudence, Thomas Morris married Susanna Bouse, and had children John Morris, Elizabeth Morris and Susan Morris. Susan Morris married Auldice Hale; their daughter Clara-Lyle Hale married George Schultz, whose daughter Elizabeth (Betty) Suzanne Schultz married John Jones. Betty (Schultz) Jones provided primary documentation on Thomas Morris and second wife Susanna Bouse and their children.

Israel, Sarah and family were living in Lewis County Virginia, where Israel was enumerated as a farmer.783 Others listed in the household in 1850, all presumed to be children (all born in Virginia): (1) David Simmons, born circa 1846; (2) William W. Simmons, born circa 1848; and (3) Taylor (Ira?) Simmons, born circa 1850. Others reported to be children of Israel and Sarah (White) Simmons (not all necessarily in order of birth):784 (4) Ira Preston White (was probably  enumerated as Taylor in the 1850 census), (5) William Simmons, (6) Rachel Victoria Simmons, (7) Joseph Dallas Simmons; and (8) Alexander Clark Simmons.
