CHAPTER LI
"PARDEE HALL IS BURNING"
....It was a lovely June day [4 June 1879]. The class marched through the streets of the town with the band playing...
One of the class had planned his wedding for the evening after the final examinations. This was Hiram B. Howland of Indianapolis . He was marrying Miss Carrie Green, daughter of Henry Green, '46. one of Easton's most prominent citizens, who was shortly to take a place on the bench of the supreme court of the State and later become its chief justice....
President Cattell performed the wedding ceremony. Many of the underclassmen who had marched to the train to give the Seniors a "send off" went up to the wedding and from the extensive lawns watched the brilliant gathering.
During the afternoon a class in chemistry had been at work in the laboratory on the top floor of the top floor of the central part of Pardee Hall.
....one of these boys is supposed , in his haste and excitement over the events of the evening, to have placed a retort, still hot, in the drawer of his desk and to have thrown his overalls on top of it.
The overalls smoldered, and broke into flames.
.... the cry went up "Pardee Hall is on fire."
.... It was clearly visible from the home of the bride.
....The wedding guests hastened to the scene.
This huge building on the top of a high hill in one mass of flames leaping high into a moonlit sky....
