536. JAMES6 S. CLIFFORD (Robert5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); died summer 1845; married (first), 7 January 1836, ELIZABETH KINSLER (also spelled Kinslow);1691 apparently Elizabeth died shortly after giving birth to their son John William Clifford in 1838 (see under John William Clifford, #964). Elizabeth's parents were probably James and Elizabeth Kinsler. James Kinsler in his will left an interest in his estate to (John) William Clifford. James S. Clifford married (second) 30 May 1839 REBECCA HALL.1692 Rebecca Hall (#618) was a granddaughter of Mary (Clifford) Whitsett (#50); hence James S. and Rebecca were second cousin. Rebecca Hall was a daughter of Richard and Rebecca (Whitsett) Hall. In 1850, Rebecca Clifford, widow, and children Harriet Clifford and John E. Clifford were living in Richland Township, Clinton County, Ohio;1693 also in the household was Rebecca's mother, Rebecca (Whitsett) Hall (#223). A "Settlement" document on the estate of Robert Clifford (no date), presumably the Robert (#211) who was the father of James S. Clifford, mentions a note "on Rebecca Hall" that was recorded 5 December 1846.1694 I do not know if this Rebecca Hall was the wife of James S. Clifford or was Rebecca (Whitsett) Hall (1786-1876), mother of the Rebecca who married James S. Clifford. Rebecca Hall's parents, Richard and Rebecca (Whitsett) Hall, were known to have been living in Harrison County in 1826.1695 James S. Clifford died intestate, and a 20 August 1845 inventory and sale bill of his personal estate gives a good indication of his brothers and sisters.1696 The administrator of the estate sale was Robert Clifford. The Cliffords purchasing items at the sale were Edward Clifford, Asbery [Lindsey] Clifford, Alexander Clifford, Mrs. Clifford (presumably Rebecca, James's wife), Sally Clifford, and Robert Clifford. Other purchasers included Dudley Hutchinson, Jackson Hutchinson, James Hutchinson, Aaron Ashbrook, James Berry, and John Ritchison.
537. LINDSEY6 ASBERY CLIFFORD (also Linzy Azby, also L. A.), (Robert5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born circa 1816;1699 died before the 1880 federal census; married OCTAVIA BERRY; born 20 December 1825.1700 Octavia, a widow, was living with her daughter Malisa and her husband Joseph Thompson in Pendleton County, Kentucky, in 1880.1701 Octavia was a daughter of John Berry, who was probably the John Berry who purchased the Clifford's farm from the heirs of Edward Clifford (see under Edward, #47).1702 John Berry's wife was Elizabeth Claypole,1703 born circa 1781 in Virginia; died 10 June 1953 in Colemanville, Harrison County, Kentucky; she was living with Lindsey and Octavia in Harrison County in 1850.1704 The town of Berry, Harrison County, Kentucky, was named for this Berry family.1705 Octavia's brother Colonel George W. Berry was killed at the Battle of Cynthiana during the Civil War.1706 In 1852, this George W. (Warren) Berry and wife Adelaid (Elizabeth Adelaid Jamison)1707 sold their shares in the dower interests of George's widowed mother, Elizabeth Berry, to Lindsey Clifford for $1,700.1708 In 1858, John S. McKinney and wife Drusilla ("late Drusilla Berry") sold their undivided share obtained from Elizabeth Berry, widow, to Lindsey Clifford.1709 Although Octavia's mother did not die until after Octavia married Lindsey, Octavia's guardian after her father, John Berry, died was an Abijah Dejarnett, re "L. A. Clifford has since married the said ward."1710,1711 For more information on John and Elizabeth (Claypool) Berry's and other children see end note #1216. Lindsey, as "Asbery," was a major purchaser of the household effects of his brother, James S. Clifford. Lindsey lived on "the homestead" (presumably that of his father, James), but moved to Grant County, Kentucky, in 1850, where he was in the merchandise business and also operated a tavern or taverns in Grant County, Kentucky.1712 (But Lindsey and family were enumerated in Harrison County in 1850.)1713 The family moved back to the homestead in 1854. It was in 1854, that Lindsey purchased land on the South Fork of the Licking River in Harrison County from David Vannsdell and wife Harriett.1714 In the mid 1850s, Lindsey purchased tracts of lands in Grant and Pendleton Counties, Kentucky, from the Conyers family.1715 Apparently one of these purchases, but perhaps something else, resulted in a court case: James F. Conyers and wife Mary versus L. A. Clifford, May 1862.1716 I do not know the outcome. A great grandson of Lindsey and Octavia, Kenneth Hester Clifford (see under Wilder Clifford, #1689), married Marie Conyers, but I do not know how she relates to James F. Conyers. In 1860, Lindsey, Octavia and family were living in the Cynthiana area of Harrison County, Kentucky.1717
538. SARAH6 (SALLY) CLIFFORD (Robert5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born 18 February 1819 (she was born circa 1824, according to the 1850 federal census);1722 died 28 April 1863; buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery, Harrison County, Kentucky;1723 married 13 October 1850 SAMUEL LEVESQUE,1724 born 7 November 1809; died 2 December, 1872; buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery. Samuel's first wife was Sarah's sister Jane, who died in 1849. Both Samuel and Sarah (and Jane) are buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery.1725 In 1860, Samuel and second wife Sarah (Clifford) Levesque were living in the Cynthiana, Kentucky, area, with the children of both Sarah and Samuel's first wife, Jane (Clifford) Levesque.1726
539. ALEXANDER6 D. (or L.) CLIFFORD (Robert5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born March 1821; on 2 November 1860, Alexander married NANCY ANN (NANNIE) RICHARDSON,1730 born April 1831.1731 In 1860, before she was married in November, Nancy Ann Richardson was enumerated in District 2, Harrison County, with her mother, Juliann, and Nancy Ann's siblings.1732 Nancy Ann was a twin of Mary J. Richardson, who married A. J. Thompson. Nancy Ann's parents were John Richardson (born circa 1801) and Juliann (Eckler) Richardson (born circa 1822). John and Juliann divorced in 1850.1733 See under Robert Clifford (#211) for more information about John and Juliann Richardson, and see end note #981 for more information about this Richardson family. In 1853, Alexander, not yet married, sold land on Twin Creek, Harrison County, to Samuel Levesque (husband of Jane Clifford, #533, and then Sarah Clifford, #538) for $3,600.1734 In 1860, Alexander, still single, was enumerated by himself in Harrison County,1735 and in April of that year he purchased land from Samuel and Sarah (Clifford) Levesque.1736 I do not know whether this land was the same land he sold to Samuel Levesque in 1853. In 1870, Alexander, a farmer, Nancy and family were living in the Cynthiana area of Harrison County, Kentucky.1737 In 1880, Alexander, as "A. D.," and family were in Tricum Village, Harrison County.1738 Also living with the family in 1880 was a William Clifford, born circa 1824, single, merchant; he was probably Alexander's brother, William Clifford (#541), although the 1850 federal census, when William was still living with his parents, reports William being born circa 1830. Alexander and Nancy were still in the Tricum area in 1900.1739 Also living in the household in 1900 was William Lemon, "grandson," born circa November 1887.
542. ROBERT6 CLIFFORD, (Robert5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born 12 February 1832; died 22 July 1918 in Harrison County, Kentucky;1743 married (first), 1 September 1857, MARY TURNER; born circa 18301744 (no known issue); married (second), 22 March 1864, Mary MILDRED INGLES,1745 born 9 July 1845 in Harrison County, Kentucky;1746 died 13 November 1924 in Harrison County.1747 In 1850, Robert was still living with his parents. In 1860, Robert and first wife Mary (Turner) were living in Harrison County, Cynthiana area;1748 also living with them were Robert's brother William Clifford (#541) and a Jane Clifford, probably his cousin (see under Charles Clifford, #213). In 1870, Robert, Mildred and first four children were living in the Falmouth area of Pendleton County, Kentucky.1749 In 1880, Robert and Mildred Clifford and first six children were back in Harrison County, living at Berry Station, where Robert was enumerated as a stock dealer.1750 In 1900, Robert, Mildred and family were living in the Centerville area of Bourbon County, Kentucky.1751 In 1910, Robert and Mary Mildred were living by themselves in Bourbon County.1752 In 1920, Mildred was living by herself in Harrison County.1753 Mary Mildred's parents were George Ingles (born circa 1822) and Talitha (Asbury) Ingles (born circa 1828).1754 In 1850, Mary M., age 5, was living in Harrison County with her parents and sisters Catherine Ingles, age 3, and Louisa Ingles, age 1; and a Mildred M. Ingles, age 49, probably George's mother.
544. ROBERT6 CLIFFORD (James5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born 24 January 1824; died 18 October 1906; buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery, Harrison County, Kentucky.1768 Robert apparently did no marry. In 1850, Robert Clifford (age 26) was living with Thomas Waldon (also spelled Walden), age 35 (or 25), and Sarah Waldon, age 22?, and their children and boarders in District 2, Harrison County.1769 This Thomas Waldon was probably the Thomas Waldon, administrator of the estate of George R. Chandler (see #215) in 1850.1770 Sarah (Kinsler) Waldon was a sister of Elizabeth Kinsler who married James S. Clifford (#536). Possibly Sarah Waldon was Sarah Clifford, a daughter of James and Rachel (Azby) Clifford, and hence a sister of Robert, see under James Clifford (#212). In 1858, Robert purchased land from his father, James Clifford, and John J. (Jeems) Clifford and John J.'s wife Sarah Jane, the deed stating that Robert was "son of said James."1771 In 1860, Robert was living with his father and sister Elizabeth in Harrison County.1772 In 1870 and 1880, Robert, farmer, was living with his brother John Jeems Clifford (#545) and family in Harrison County.1773 In 1900, Robert was living with William Filer (see Eliza Jane Clifford, #999) and family in the Tricum area of Harrison County.1774 545. JOHN6 JAMES (also JEEMS) CLIFFORD (James5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born 22 December 1825 in Kentucky; died 8 December 1901; buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery, Harrison County, Kentucky; married SARA JANE MARR; born 1 August 1833 in Kentucky; died 18 December 1907; buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery, Harrison County.1775 An 1858 deed lists Robert Clifford purchasing land from James Clifford and John J. Clifford and John J.'s wife Sara Jane. The deed stated that Robert was "son of said James."1776 One would presume that the John J. was also a son of James. Sara was a daughter of John Marr (born 27 March 1794, died 14 July 1877) and Jane (Stump) Marr (born 21 April 1804, died 1 June 1889); in 1850, Sara was still living with her parents and siblings Margaret Marr, age 10, Lewis Marr, age 9, James Marr, age 7, and Louisa Marr, age 4.1777 In 1860, John J., a farmer, and three children were living in Harrison County.1778 In 1870 and 1880, John J. and Sara and family were living in Harrison County, with John Jeems's brother Robert Clifford (#544), a farmer.1779 In 1900, John J. and Sara and Orie Richardson, "grandson," born October 1889, were living in the Tricum area, Harrison County.1780 Orie was a son of Frances Clifford (#1002) who married James William Richardson.
546. HULDA6 CLIFFORD (James5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born circa 1828; probably died before the 1870 federal census. On 6 September 1849, Hulda married NICHOLAS DAY;1801 born circa 1823. In the 1850 federal census for Harrison County, Kentucky, Nicholas Day was enumerated with Hulda and her parents and Hulda's siblings with no indication that Hulda and Nicholas were yet married.1802 In 1860, Nicholas, a grocer, Hulda and their five children, and Hulda's sister Ann were in Harrison County, Colemanville area.1803 Apparently Hulda was deceased by 1870, when Nicholas, a laborer, and children were enumerated in Harrison County.1804 In 1880, Nicholas and second wife Mary Jane [-?-], born circa 1845, and their children Roam Day (age 4) and Eliza Day (age 2) were living in Berry Station, Harrison County.1805 Also in the household at this time were two of Nicholas and Hulda's children, James M. (enumerated as Mort) and James D. (enumerated as Duck) Day.
549. FRANCES6 (FRANEY) CLIFFORD (James5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born circa 1838; probably died by 1887 (her husband had a child by a second wife in May 1888); on 26 October 1859 in Harrison County, she married CHARLES RUDDELL NORTON,1807 born 16 November 1836 in Kentucky; died 23 December 1912 in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky; buried in Corinth, Grant County, Kentucky. Charles Norton was a son of Archibald Norton (1797-1848) and Nancy Mitts Nichols Norton (1803-1855). Archibald's parents were John Norton (circa 1762-1843/1850) and Ann (Riddle) (Ruddell?) Norton, early settlers in Grant County, Kentucky. After Frances (Clifford) Norton died, Charles married Ann L. [-?-], born September 1863 in Kentucky. Charles and Ann had children Clarence Norton, born May 1888, and Flora Norton, born August 1894.1808 In 1860, Charles, as "Francis?," and Frances, no children, were enumerated in Harrison County.1809 Frances's brother Levi Clifford (#550) was living with them at that time. In 1880, Charles, Frances and children were living in Scott County, Kentucky, where Charles "worked in a blacksmith shop."1810
552. ROBERT6 TAYLOR CLIFFORD (Charles5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born circa 1840-1844;1813 married PHOEBE JANE WILSON; born 25 October 1846; died 2 June 1919; she was a daughter of Samuel and Sarah Jane (McMillen) Wilson.1814 Robert was in the Union Army during the Civil War, 18th Kentucky Infantry.1815 In 1870, Robert Clifford was living in Elizabethtown, Pendleton County, Kentucky, with wife Phoebe and children Henry Clifford, born circa 1867, and Mary Clifford, born circa 1869.1816 In 1910, Robert was possibly deceased. Phoebe Jane (as Jane) was living with her sons Robert, James, Henry and grandson "Shelly" (Shelby) Clifford (son of Robert) in Menifee County, Kentucky.1817 I can not resolve the conflict between children Henry (born 1867) and Mary (born 1869) of the 1870 federal census and the Mary (born circa 1881-1882) and Henry (born 1883) of the 1910, 1920 and 1930 federal censuses. Since the dates for Mary and Henry in the "Clarence Emerson -Frenchburg, KY" web site 1818 correlates with the 1910-1930 censuses, I will list the children in order of these censuses. Neither Henry nor Mary was listed with the household in the 1880 federal census.1819 Possibly the Mary and Henry of the 1870 census died, and two subsequent children were also named Mary and Henry. This is supported by a 30 November 2001 letter of Zylpha (Clifford) Sprinkles (see James Clifford, #1022), who is a granddaughter of Robert and Phoebe Clifford. She mentions that at the time of the 1900 federal census Robert and Phoebe (Wilson) Clifford reported eight living children and three that were dead, and Zylpha suggests that perhaps they used some of the names of children that died young. There was also a Robert Clifford, born circa 1835 in Kentucky, listed as a farm laborer, living with a Matthew Thomison family in the Falmouth area of Pendleton County in 1870.1820 I can not place this Robert Clifford.
571. CHARLES6 EDWARD CLIFFORD (John5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born August 1840; died 2 November 1912 in Harrison County, Kentucky;1821 married SUSANNAH PATRICK or PATREE1822 in Harrison County on 15 August 1864; she was born 16 July 1848 in Kentucky;1823 died 12 July 1924 in Harrison County.1824 According to an 11 January 2001 email from James Thomas Clifford (see under James Samuel Clifford, #1468), her maiden name was Susannah Patrick, a daughter of Hiram and Elizabeth (Spradling) Patrick.1825 In 1870, Charles Edward (enumerated as Edward) and Susannah (enumerated as Susan) and children Richard, James A. and William G. were living in Callensville, Pendleton County, Kentucky.1826 In 1880, Edward and Susan and first eight children were living in the Berry Station area, Harrison County, Kentucky.1827 In 1900, Charles, Susannah and family were living in the Richland area of Harrison County.1828 In 1910, Charles Edward, Susannah and son John Clifford were living in Harrison County.1829 By 1920, Charles Edward had died, and Susannah and her son John were still living in Harrison County.1830 In 1880, there was a Lee Pattree and family living in Berry Station, Harrison County: Lee B. Patree, 26; Lucinda Patree, 24 (wife); and Anne Patree, 3, daughter. Also in the household was a John Clifford, age 1?.1831 Possible he was the John Clifford, son of Charles Edward and Susannah (Patrick/Patree) Clifford.
Probably Charles Edward had a first wife, Armilda Clayton, who Charles Edward married 12 December 1861 in Harrison County, Kentucky (this information from Raymond Frank Clifford and his grandson Stephen Clifford, see under #1837), and they had child Molly Clifford, no dates, who married A. D. (Lee A.?) Townsend and had child Ann Townsend, born 1881; died 2 September 1964;1841 buried in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Harrison County, Kentucky.1842 However, if this is correct, Molly would have probably been a first child and married very young. Ann Townsend married Harvey Hardin. Their children were (1) Philip Sheridan Hardin, born 1904, died November 1951 (married Frances Smith and had child Helen Hardin who married William Gregory), (2) Ray Hardin, (3) Genevieve Hardin, (4) Maxine Hardin, and (5) Albert Hardin. But note that in 1900, Lee A. Townsend, born November 1857, and wife Beatrice, born February 1867, and large family (but no Ann) were living in Harrison County, Kentucky.1843 573. JOHN6 JAMES CLIFFORD (J. J.) or James John Clifford (John5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born 26 October 1844; died 18 February 1926 or 22 December 1926;1844 buried in Sunrise Cemetery, Harrison County, Kentucky;1845 married (first) in Harrison County February 1867 FRANCES MCKENNEY;1846 born 24 November 1847; died 10 May 1876; buried in Barlow Methodist Church Cemetery,1847 located near the Barlow Methodist Church, northeast of Cynthiana; married (second) NANCY MCKENNEY; born 3 February 1850; died 4 October 1913 in Harrison County;1848 buried in Sunrise Cemetery. Perhaps McKenney and McKinney are spelling variations for the same Harrison County clan. Possibly Frances and Nancy McKenney were sisters. In 1880, "James John" and wife Nancy were living in Harrison County.1849 In the household were James John's brother Alexander Clifford (#577) and wife Julia and James John's brother Mortimer Clifford (#580). Nancy (McKenney) Clifford's mother, Doris? McKenney, born circa 1814, was also in the household. In 1900, "John James," Nancy and family were still in Harrison County, the Richland District.1850 In 1910, still in Harrison County, Estell C. Wyatt, age 6, "GS" (see #1042) was living with the family.1851 In 1920, "John James" was living with his son-in-law, Samuel Barlow, in Harrison County.1852
Also living with John James Clifford and family in 1900 was a Robert Maines, "nephew," born September 1882. 576. ROBERT6 CLIFFORD (John5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born circa 1851 in Kentucky; married STELLA BRYANT; born circa 1855 in Kentucky1858 Birth locations of children indicate that Robert and Stella moved to Indiana between 1876 and 1878. In 1880, Robert, Stella and family were living in the Dublin area of Wayne County, Indiana; Robert was reported as a day laborer.1859 By 1920, Robert and Stella were living next door to their son Fred Clifford and his family in Jackson Township, Wayne County, Indiana, where Robert was enumerated as a junk dealer.1860 There was a Stella B. Clifford, a resident of Pendleton County, Kentucky, age 85, who died 7 January 1973 in Harrison County, Kentucky.1861
577. ALEXANDER6 CLIFFORD (John5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born April 1852; died 26 June 1903; married JULIA ETTA (also Juliaette) ROBERTS; born 27 March 1861; died 27 February 1928.1867 Julia Roberts was a daughter of Andrew J. and Agnes (Payne) Roberts. Julia's siblings were John F. Roberts, Andrew J. Roberts, Rebecca Roberts (born 10 December 1856), James Roberts, and Emma A. Roberts.1868 In 1880, Alexander and Julia were living with Alexander's brother James Clifford and family in Richland District, Harrison County.1869 In 1900 Alexander, Julia and son John were living in the Falmouth area, Pendleton County, Kentucky.
578. WILLIAM6 H. CLIFFORD (John5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born January 1852 in Kentucky; married LEE BOOTH MURPHY; born April 1853 in Virginia.1870. The family was in Wyaconda Township, Clark County, Missouri, in 1900 (page 8B), where William was a farmer. in 1910, the family had moved to Warsaw, Hancock County, Illinois (page 18A). William had died by 1930, and Lee (widow) and daughter Genie were living in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa (page 5B).
580. MORTIMER6 CLIFFORD (John5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born September 18 1856; on 14 March 1887, Mortimer married MARY ANN COBB;1871 born March 1867; probably married (second) BEATRICE M. [-?-]; born circa 1864 in Kentucky. In 1880, Mortimer was living with his brothers James and Alexander and their families in Richland District, Harrison County, Kentucky.1872 In 1900, Mortimer, Mary Ann and family were living in Cynthiana, Harrison County, where Mortimer was listed as working in a banking house.1873 In 1910, Mortimer and family were living in the Covington area, Kenton County, Kentucky.1874 At this time his wife was listed as Beatrice M. Clifford, born circa 1868. Since two step-sons, Raymond Townsend (age 15) and George Townsend (age 11), and one step-daughter, Edna Townsend (age 18), were in the family in 1910, probably Beatrice was a second wife. Note that an Edna Ramp Townsend was the second wife of John James Clifford (#545).
