In 1900, James, Nannie and family were living in Harrison County.2791 In 1910, James (listed as James R.), Nannie and youngest child, Joseph, were still in Harrison County.2792 In 1920, James R., and wife "Annie" were living in the Tricum area of Harrison County.2793 In 1930, James R. Clifford, enumerated as a stock farmer, and wife Anna were living in Harrison County.2794 Was Annie, (born circa 1871-1872), a second wife; or was Anna in fact Nannie with an age different from that reported in the 1900 federal census?

In 1920, Jake, Alpha (Clifford) Thomas and son Holton were living in the Colemansville area, Harrison County, where Jake was farming (census page 6A).

Standley, Hillman and Robert are buried in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthia, Kentucky2799 In 1930, the family was living in the Connersville area of Harrison County, where Boyd was listed as a farmer.2800 According to a May 2004 email of Renna Lake (Atlanta, Georgia), great granddaughter of Renna (Clifford) Lake, Boyd and Renna and all the children resided in Harrison County, Kentucky.
  1727 vi. Joseph Zillar Clifford; born circa 1904. I believe he is the Ziler Clifford, born circa 1904; married Elsia [-?-], born circa 1903. In 1930, Ziler and Elsie, no children were living in the Kinman district, Harrison County, Kentucky, where Ziler was enumerated as a farmer.2801



998. ROBERT7 LEE CLIFFORD (John6, James5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born February 1864; he was probably the R. L. Clifford who died 18 June 1946 in Harrison County, Kentucky, age 82 (born circa 1864).2802 Robert Lee Clifford married EVA ASHBROOK2803 on 27 January 1887; she was born circa 1866.2804 She was probably the Eva L. Clifford who died 8 August 1924, age 57 (born circa 1867).2805

In 1900, Robert, Eva and family were living in the Tricum area of Harrison County. In 1920, Robert, Eva and children Lou and Allen were living in the Tricum area, Harrison County.2806 In 1930, Robert, a proprietor of a country store, still in the Tricum area, Harrison County, Kentucky, with son Allen Clifford.2807

In 1930, Snell, Jennie, and child Wanda Clifford were still in Covington, Kentucky (census page 13A), where Snell was enumerated as an electric worker in an X-Ray factory.

There was a Verna Clifford, born 27 January 1893, died 2 February 1893, buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery, daughter of R. "J." Clifford and Eva; and there was a Lydia R. Clifford, born 1 February 1894, died 1 July 1895, buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery, Harrison County, daughter of R. "J." Clifford and Eva Clifford. The "J." probably should be an "L."2812


999. ELIZA7 JANE CLIFFORD (John6, James5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born 1 September 1866 in Kentucky; died 25 February 1922 in Harrison County; buried in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana, Harrison County; married WILLIAM A. FILER; born 3 March 1860 in Kentucky; died 14 February 1946; buried in Battle Grove Cemetery.2813

William, a farmer, was a son of John and Barbara (Bay/Bey/Beye) Filer.2814 Both John Filer (born 16 August 1825) and Barbara E. Filer (died 11 September 1904) are buried in Rocky Springs Cemetery, Harrison County.

In 1880, William A. Filer was still living with his parents in Harrison County, where he was listed as age 26 (born circa 1854).2815 In 1900, William, Eliza and family were living next door to William's parents in the Casons District of Harrison County. Also in William and Eliza's household in 1900 was Robert Clifford (#544), born January 1824, "boarder." He was an uncle of Eliza (Clifford) Filer.2816 In 1930, William, enumerated as a farmer, was living in the Tricum area, Harrison County, Kentucky, with daughters Lena and Florence and Florence's husband and family.2817

  1737 v. Florence (Flossie) Filer; born 15 February 1893 in Kentucky; died 11 November 1982; buried in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry, Kentucky; married, 24 September 1913, Carl Smith; born 24 September 1891 in Kentucky. He was a son of John Thomas and Louisa (Bowen) Smith.
They had two children (both born in Kentucky):
(a) Flossie Elmo Smith, born 30 January 1919, died 8 January 1949, married Frazier Calvin Moses.
(b) Dorothy Francis Smith, born 12 February 1923, died 4 July 1996 in San Antonio, Texas, married Glen Wiglesworth. In 1930, Florence, Carl and family were living with Florence's father in the Tricum area of Harrison County, where Carl was enumerated as a stock farmer.
  1738 vi. Robert L. Filer; born June 1896; died 22 January 1969 in Bourbon County; buried in Paris Cemetery, Paris, Bourbon County; married (first) Lela Katherine Wiglesworth; born circa 1898; died 12 June 1933 in Bourbon County; her father was Robert Wiglesworth. Robert L. Filer, a furniture upholsterer, married (second), 16 June 1934, Hazel Crombie; born 1907; died 16 August 1992 in Bourbon County; buried in Paris Cemetery, Bourbon County, Kentucky. Hazel was a daughter of Robert W. and Emma Mae (Wilson) Crombie.
Robert L. Filer had two children (I do not know whether Lela or Hazel was the mother):

  1739 vii. John William Filer; born 25 May 1900; died 23 March 1923 of tuberculosis; buried in Battle Grove Cemetery. He was a farmer.
  1740 viii. Eliza (Lyde) Filer; born circa 1905; died 13 May 1989 in Harrison County, Kentucky, but a resident of Bracken County, Kentucky;2820 married King Stevens; born circa 1908; died 8 October 1993 in Brookville, Bracken County.2821

FLORENCE7 DAY (Hulda6 Clifford, James5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born October 1852 in Kentucky; on 14 June 1871, she married GEORGE WILLIAM LAIL; born 23 October 1838; died 2 July 1912.2822 George Lail's brother Charles Lail married Florence's second cousin Ann Clifford (#970).

In 1880, George, Florence and children Maud (age 8), Irene (age 5), Wade (age 3) and Allen (age 1) were living in the Berry area of Harrison County, Kentucky.2823 In 1900, George, Florence and family were living in Cynthiana, Harrison County, where George was listed as a county judge.2824 In 1920, Florence was living in Cynthiana, Kentucky, with her sons Erwin and Rodney and her married daughter Georgia (Lail) Vanhook.2825

In 1920, Thomas, Maude, and children Gilbert, Louise, Margaret, Wade, and Thomas were living in the Berry area, Harrison County, Kentucky, where Thomas was enumerated as a farmer.2827 Also in the household in 1920 was Edward R. Lail, born circa 1853, "brother-in-law." This is apparently an error. In 1930, Thomas and Maude and children Margaret were living next to their daughter Anna McClain and family in Berry, Harrison County, Kentucky (page 3B); where Thomas was still enumerated as a farmer.

  1744 iv. Jennie (enumerated as Irene in the 1880 federal census?) L. Lail; born 22 October 1874; died 1952; married John W. Glinn (or Glenn); born January 1865. In 1900, John, Jennie and first three children were living in Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky, where John was listed as a day laborer.2834 The family was still in Cynthiana in 1910 (page 1A).

  1747 vii. (tentative) Jane? Lail; born February 1881. Possibly she was Ina Lail, who I have listed as the second born child.
  1748 viii. Charles Erwin Lail; born 30 November 1887 in Kentucky; died 1936; married Sarah Bush Showalter; born circa 1890; died 1963. In 1930, Charles and Sarah, married two years, were living in Jackson, Jackson County, Michigan (page 3B), where Charles was a prison guard at the state prison—no children reported in the 1930 census.
  1749 ix. Rodney Francis Lail; born 10 March 1890; died 13 April, 1960. His 1918 World War One Draft Registration Card lists him as single, living in Binghamton, New York and working as a time keeper.
  1750 x. Georgia Bryan Lail; born 12 July 1896; died 6 May 1980;2838 married Edgar Vanhook; born circa 1889. In 1920, Edgar and Georgia, no children, were living in Cynthiana, Kentucky, in the household of her mother, Florence Lail, and two of Georgia's brothers, Erwin Lail and Rodney Lail.2839 In 1920, Edgar Vanhook was enumerated as a retail merchant, hardware. In 1930, Edgar and Georgia were living alone in Cynthiana, where Edgar was enumerated as a fire insurance agent.2840

FRANCIS7 (FRANK) MARION NORTON (Frances6 Clifford, James5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born 1 April 1869 in Kentucky; married ZORILDA HAMILTON; born March 1874 in Kentucky; died 23 July 1948 in Kenton, Kentucky.2841 Zorelda's parents were Jacob and Susan (Jones) Hamilton (re Kentucky Death Records). In 1910, the family was living in the Grassy Creek area, Pendleton County, Kentucky (census page 1B), where Frank was enumerated as a blacksmith, own shop. In 1930, Frank, Zorelda and son Randall were in Falmouth, Pendleton County, Kentucky, where Frank was still enumerated as a blacksmith (page 7A).

I can not resolve the above information with the 1920 federal census that reports the children (still living with their parents) of James and Florence Kendrick to be Grace Kendrick, age 7, Bertha Kendrick, age 6 and James R. Kendrick, age 1, at which time Florence would have been age 54.2852 Also this census reports Florence's father to have been born in North Carolina and her mother to have been born in Texas; whereas the other children of Robert and Phoebe Clifford report both their parents being born in Kentucky. Perhaps this Florence was not Florence (Clifford) Kendrick, although her age, 55 (born circa 1875), correlates with age of Florence Clifford, born 1876.

ROBERT7 CLIFFORD (Robert6, Charles5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born circa 1877; married (first) MARY CHANDLER; married (second) FLORENCE HAGEN; born 13 April 1892; died 15 April 1969, a resident of the Means area, Menifee County, Kentucky.2853 She was a sister of Maggie Hagen, who married Robert's brother, Henry Taylor Clifford.2854

In 1930, Robert, Florence (as Flora) and children Shelby, Boyd, Melva and Sylvester were living in the Frenchburg area, Menifee County, Kentucky, where Robert was enumerated as a farmer.2855

  1782 ii. William Emerson; born 1903 in Frenchburg; died 9 January 1964 in Middletown, Ohio, married Mae [—?—]. There was a William Emerson, born 19 April 1903, died August 1982, a resident of Akron, Summit County, Ohio.2864

Clarence Andrew Emerson;2865 born 15 July 1905 in Kentucky; died November 1969, a resident of Rockford, Mercer County, Ohio;2866 married (first) Elizabeth Hall; born circa 1905 in Kentucky;2867 married (second) Dorothy Dawson; born 17 October 1915.2868 In 1920, Clarence was living with his uncle James Clifford (#1022).2869 In 1930, Clarence, Elizabeth and children James and Norman were living in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio, where Clarence was enumerated as a garage mechanic.2870

In 1920, Kelly was living with his uncle Henry Taylor Clifford (#1024) and his family in Menifee County, Kentucky.2873 In 1930, about 2 years after Kelly and Lula were married, they (no children) were living in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio, where Kelly was enumerated as a cutter in a paper mill.2874

In 1920, Henry (enumerated as a farmer), Maggie and children Jane, Oney, Cora and nephew Kelly Emerson were living in District 1, Menifee County, Kentucky;2876 they were next door to Henry's brother James Clifford. In 1930, Henry (enumerated as Taylor), Maggie and first six children were still living in Menifee County.2877

  1798 v. Gladys Griggs; married Ernest Morrison. The 1930 federal census does not list a Gladys, but lists the youngest child, born circa 1929, as Ester Griggs.2879



1026. RICHARD7 CLIFFORD (Charles6, John5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born 27 November 1865; died circa 1896-1901; married KATHERINE KIMBLE; born August 1874; died between 1904 and 1910.2880

After Richard died, Katherine married Richard's brother George Francis Clifford (#1031). (George married, second, Odella Barnes). The 1910 federal soundex for Clifford of Kentucky,2881 lists a Vernie Clifford, born circa 1893; Roger Clifford, born circa 1894; Ann Clifford, born circa 1896; and a Gertrude Clifford, born circa 1900; all living with their uncle George Clifford in Harrison County. They would be the children of Richard Clifford.

Vernie8 (Verna) Clifford; born 15 July 1892 in Kenucky; died 23 July 1968 in Bourbon County, Kentucky; married Arthur William Toadvine; born 14 February 1876 in Harrison County, Kentucky; died 18 May 1934 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Arthur's first wife was Ella [—?—]; born circa 1883 in Kentucky. In 1920, Arthur, Verna and children of both Ella and Verna (Clifford) Toadvine were in Millersburg, Bourbon County. where Arthur was farming. (Children of Arthur and first wife Ella known from the 1910 and 1920 federal censuses were Thelma Toadvine, Earnest Toadvine and Elwood Toadvine.)
Children of Arthur and first wife or second wife Verna known from the 1920 federal census (all born in Kentucky):
(a) Una Toadvine; born circa 1914.
(b) Daisy Toadvine; born circa 1916.
(c) Theodore Toadvine; born circa 1918.
Another child of Arthur and Verna (Clifford) Toadvine was reported to be

Roger Clifford; born 5 September 1893; died 20 February 1964 in Harrison County, Kentucky; married Victoria Kelley; born 5 September 1897; died 25 February 1965 in Harrison County, Kentucky.2884 Both Roger and Victoria are buried in Barlow Methodist Church Cemetery, located at the Barlow Methodist Church, northeast of Cynthiana, Harrison County.2885 In 1920, Roger, Victoria and child C. L. (son) were living in Cynthiana.2886 In 1930, Roger, Victoria, and C. L. Clifford, were living in the Richland area of Harrison County, Kentucky, where Roger was enumerated as a farmer.2887
Child of Roger and Victoria (Kelley) Clifford:
(i) C. L. Clifford, born 23 June 1915; he was a resident of Falmouth, Pendleton County when he died 14 July 1987 in Harrison County.2888 C. L. Clifford married Grace Perkins; born 18 December 1914, died 2 December 1995, a resident of Falmouth, Pendleton County.2889 Both C. L. and Grace are buried in Barlow Methodist Church Cemetery, Harrison County.2890 According to information received from Amanda Lewis, C. L. and Grace Clifford had two children. One was a son who died young; the other was Roger Clifford, who married (first) Janet McClanahan; married (second) Hilda Ramsey. Roger and second wife, Hilda, had child Bethany Clifford. Roger and first wife, Janet, had children Douglas and Victoria. Victoria Clifford married (first) Greg Lewis, married (second) Jeff Alford. Gregg and first wife Victoria (Clifford) had one child, Amanda Lewis. Amanda Lewis generously provided photographs of Clifford stones that she took in Rocky Springs Cemetery, near Cynthiana, Kentucky.

Our Harrison County Roger Clifford should not be confused with the Trimble County, Kentucky, Roger Clifford, who was also born in 1893 and married Vernie [—?—], who died at age 100. For information on the Trimble County, Kentucky, Cliffords, see Appendix 7
  1801 iii. Ann Belle Clifford; born August 1896; died 21 January 1918 in Bourbon County, Kentucky (re Kentucky Deaths); married Grover Butler.
  1802 iv. Gertrude Clifford; born 17 April 1897; died 19 May 1971, a resident of Campbell County, Kentucky;2891 married Samuel Hitch; born circa 1889; died (tentative) 26 September 1952 in Bracken County, Kentucky. In 1930, Samuel and Gertrude and family were living in Bracken County, Kentucky, where Samuel was enumerated as a farmer.

In 1880, James (as Egleson or Anderson?), age 14 (born circa 1866), was enumerated with his parents in Harrison County.2896 In 1900, James, Alice and family were living in Bracken County, Kentucky (northern Kentucky, east of Cincinnati), where James was listed as born June 1865.2897 In 1920, James, Alice and family were back in Harrison County, living in Cynthiana, where James was listed as age 59 (born 1861) and enumerated as a laborer on the railroad.2898

WILLIAM7 GRANT CLIFFORD (Charles6, John5, Edward4, Charles3, James2, unknown Clifford1); born August 18682904 or 1865;2905 died (tentative) 29 August 1931 in Bourbon County, Kentucky;2906 on 1 September 1889 in Ruddle Mills, Bourbon County, he married ELIZABETH CLAY ASHBROOK;2907 born November 1872. In 1900, Grant, Elizabeth and family were living in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Elizabeth was probably deceased by 1910, when William G. and family were enumerated in Bourbon County, Kentucky.2908 In 1920, a William Clifford, born circa 1870, his wife Laura [—?—], born circa 1873, and children Charles Clifford, born circa 1902, and Sophie Clifford, born circa 1904, were living in Bourbon County, Kentucky.2909 In 1930, William, a crop farmer, and Laura were living by themselves in the Millersburg area of Bourbon County.2910 Probably this was William Grant Clifford with a second wife, Laura [—?—]. Laura Clifford, age 64, died 18 June 1936 in Bourbon County, Kentucky.2911

  1808 i. Sadie8 M. Clifford; born 23 May 1890; possibly died by 1917 (see later); married Artis Owens. There was an Artis Owens who was born 16 August 1886, died October 1968 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and whose Social Security benefits were issued in Kentucky. In 1920, this Artis Owens was enumerated in the Hutchinson area, Bourbon County, Kentucky.2913 His wife was listed as Nancy, born circa 1897 in Kentucky. In 1930, Nancy Owens, widow, and children were living in Lexington, Kentucky.2914
Children of Artis and Sadie (Clifford) Owens listed in the 1920 and 1930 federal censuses (all born in Kentucky):
(a) Georgia Owens, born circa 1910.
(b) Walter Lee Owens, born circa 1911.
(c) Chester Owens, born circa 1917.

(f) Clarence Owens, born (private) (known from the 1930 federal census). Since Nancy would have only been age circa 13 and 14 when the first two children were born, probably the first two children were those of Artis and Sadie; and Nancy was Artis Owen's second wife. Also note that Sadie had a sister, Georgia.
  1809 ii. Minnie T. Clifford; born 3 October 1891 in Bourbon County, Kentucky; married James Smart. Possibly our Minnie was the Minnie Smart, age 24, died 16 June 1916 in Fleming County, Kentucky (re Kentucky Death Index).
  1810 iii. Georgia Clifford; born October 1893; married William ?D. Smart (presumably related to the James Smart who married Georgia's sister Minnie); born circa 1892 in Kentucky. In 1920, the family was living in Dayton, Ohio, where William was enumerated as a foreman, construction company (page 9A). Also in the family in 1920 was Charles S. Smart, age 18, "nephew."

(b) David C. Smart; born circa 1917 in Ohio.

  1811 iv. Elizabeth Clifford; born 22 September 1899 at Ruddle Mills, Bourbon County, Kentucky; died 14 October 1985; married Richard Anthony Smith.
  1812 v. Charles Clifford; born 10 December 1900 in Bourbon County, Kentucky; married Hazel Caldwell Maxey; born circa 1907 in Kentucky. In 1930, Charles, Hazel and child William were living in the Millersburg area of Bourbon County, Kentucky, where Charles was enumerated as a farmer.2915
