died 1941 in Columbus, Ohio; buried in Union Cemetery, Columbus, Ohio.
Her parents were Cyrus Markle and Elizabeth (Brisbine) Greenawalt. 3139
Joseph Clifford witnessed a 1900 document of Hugh McCune Clifford
(#718). 3140 In 1900, the family was in McKeesport,
Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. 3141
Joseph was a physician in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. According to a 10
April 1986 letter from Charles D. Clifford (Fort Mitchell, Kentucky) to
me, after Joseph's death, his widow and children moved to Ohio.
According to Hedley (1918a), page 185, Joseph B. Clifford, after
completing courses at the Ligonier Academy, taught school for a short
time, then accepted a position in the Braddock ticket office of the
Pennsylvania Railroad from which he was transferred to the Union
Station in Pittsburgh. He eventually went into the bakery business,
which proved to be a profitable venture, and he could then afford to
study medicine at the Cleveland Medical College from which he graduated
in 1893. Dr. Clifford then took up practice in McKeesport,
Pennsylvania, where he was located for 15 years prior to his death.
Hedley (1918), page 285, comments that "considering the difficulties
under which his education was obtained it is particularly deplorable to
note that his death was caused by blood-poisoning which resulted from
an infection contracted while practicing surgery." Joseph B. Clifford
was a member of Darwin Medical Association, the McKeesport Board of
Health, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and a thirty-third
degree member of Free and Accepted Masons. There is a biography with
photograph of Joseph Beachley Clifford in Memoirs of Allegheny County,

Charles Dick
Clifford was born 19 July 1915 in Ligonier, Pennsylvania; died 18 May 2006. After
graduating from Ligonier High School, he attended a Pittsburgh business
school, then worked for a short time in the Ligonier Post Office. This
was followed by 5 years in the army during World War II.
In February
1942, Charles married Verna Cassidy; they have one daughter:
(a) Karen
Ann Clifford, born 1944.
Shortly after the end of the war, Verna and
Charles divorced. Charles, an accountant, then worked for the Miami
Transit Company and Miami Beach Railway Company (Florida), before
moving to Kentucky, where he was Controller of the Green Line, which
was headquartered in Covington.
While in Cincinnati, Charles would get
his hair cut in a shop in the Gibson Hotel by their only female barber,
Georgia Runyan. They were married 11 May 1953.
Charles became Chief Tax
Auditor for the City of Cincinnati and then Tax Commissioner for the
City of Cincinnati, retiring to Florida in 1975. In the early 1990s,
Charles and Georgia moved back to the Cincinnati area (Fort Mitchell,
Kentucky). |
It is to Charles D. Clifford that Clifford workers owe so much, as is
apparent from this report. Charles was not only a talented and
enthusiastic writer and Clifford researcher, he was always willing to
share information. Charles and colleague W. Robert Brown (#2036) were
fine fellows; and, if for no other reason, this exercise was worth it
simply to make the acquaintance of these two exemplary gentlemen. It is
with great pleasure that I dedicate this book to Charles D. Clifford
and W. Robert Brown.

Found Dead along Millcreek. Frank Kleindienst
Missing For Two Days.
Likely Accidental Drowning. Found by boys along bank of Millcreek below
bridge north of Ligonier … It is supposed he was washed there by the
high water which then subsided and left his body on the bank … There
were several bruises about his head and face likely caused by striking
against the stones in the creek while washing down stream. It is
thought he was walking home from town to the home of his father-in-law,
A. B. Clifford and got off the direct road and walked down a road
leading to a steep bank at a deep hole of water and stepped over
falling into the deep water and drowned… . Mr. Kleindienst was last
seen on Tuesday evening on the pike west of town. First near Coalpit
walking toward town by C. O. Graham; second by W. M. Nicely and Frank
Hartman walking toward Latrobe beyond where S. W. Overcash lives; then
by Roy Sible later coming towards Ligonier near Elder residence. He was
evidently bewildered and coming to Ligonier started to go to Mr.
Clifford's, where his wife and child were, and missing the road walked
into the creek. His watch and other valuables were found on his person
… The finding of the Coroner's jury was 'Accidental Death.' … He was
about 45 years old at the time of his death.
