1347. ERMA⁷ (also called Elmira) CLIFFORD (Gilson⁶, James⁵, Charles⁴, Charles³, James², unknown Clifford¹); born March 1891; married WALTER S. ROSS; born circa 1887 in Pennsylvania.

In 1900, Erma, listed as Elmira, was living with her mother in East Conemaugh, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.³³⁰⁵ Erma/Elmira was not mentioned as a child in the material of W. Robert Brown, who probably took his information from Lacy Lewis's "Early memories." In 1910, Erma was still with her mother (and Anna's husband John R. Anderson) in East Conemaugh.³³⁰⁶ In 1920, Erma, husband Walter S. Ross, and family were living in East Taylor Township, Cambria County.³³⁰⁷ Also in the household in 1920 were Erma's mother, Anna (as Annie B. Anderson, widow), Erma's sister, Jean Clifford, and apparently Erma's half-brother Harry R. Anderson (although he was listed as "nephew"). Walter Ross's occupation in 1920 was listed as a brakeman, steam railroad. By 1930, the family had moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Walter was listed in the 1930 federal census as an assistant yard master.³³⁰⁸ This census reported Walter and Erma having been married for 19 years.

	2047	i.	Paul8 C. (Clifford?) Ross; born circa 1912. In 1930, Paul, single and living with his parents, was listed as a chemist for a manufacturing company. There was a Paul C. Ross, born 21 June 1912, died 13 August 1995, #481-03-010, reported in the US Social Security Death Index, benefits issued before 1951 in Iowa. Since only three "Paul C. Ross" were reported in the Index, with the other two born in the 1920s, I suspect he is our Paul.

1348. JEAN⁷ CLIFFORD (Gilson⁶ James⁵, Charles⁴, Charles³, James², unknown Clifford¹); born 28 December 1896; died 3 March 1999 (age 102). That our Jean Clifford died in 1999 is tentative. The 1900 federal census reports Gilson's daughter Jean Clifford born December 1896. There were nine "Jean Cliffords" listed in the US Social Security Death Index in 2002, but only two were born in the nineteenth century. One was born 1882, the other was born 28 December 1896, died 3 March 1999, no residence given, benefits issued in Ohio before 1951.

In 1900 our Jean Clifford was living with her mother in East Conemaugh, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.³³⁰⁹ In 1910, she was enumerated with her mother and sister Erma (and Anna's husband John R. Anderson) in East Conemaugh.³³¹⁰ In 1920, Jean was living with her mother in the household of her sister Erma and her husband, Walter S. Ross, and family in East Taylor Township (Park Hill), Cambria County.³³¹¹ This township is on the outskirts of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. In this census, Jean was listed as a stenographer, railroad. Jean Clifford worked at one time for the Pennsylvania Railroad in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.³³¹²


1384. ROBERT⁷ SEBASTIAN CLIFFORD (James⁶, Joseph⁵, Charles⁴, Charles³, James², unknown Clifford¹); born 20 May 1898; died January 1978, at which time he was a resident of Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana;³³¹³ on 25 October 1927, he married MARY M. SULLIVAN; born 1 January 1902; died March 1974, a resident of Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana.

Robert S. Clifford was author of what I have been calling "The Robert Sebastian Clifford Chart," which pertains to the descendants of Robert's grandfather Joseph Clifford (#240) and includes information on other descendants of Charles and Jane (Gordon) Clifford. For more information on this chart, see References. Robert received a B. A. degree from the University of Michigan in 1923. He was a well-known Fort Wayne businessman and was associated with the Clifford Brothers Coal Company, see also under his father, James E. Clifford (#1379).³³¹⁴

WILLIAM⁷ BARR MCELROY (James⁶ McElroy, Sarah⁵ Menoher, Jane⁴ Clifford, Charles³, James², unknown Clifford¹); born circa 1843; died 4 October 1889;³³¹⁶ in Cedar Falls, Iowa.³³¹⁷ On 20 February 1866,³³¹⁸ William married JENNIE LYTLE; born circa 1846.³³¹⁹ William Barr McElroy was a Civil War veteran, 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry.³³²⁰

Perhaps if one goes back a few more generations, one would find a relationship between the large Lytle/Little clan in the Ligonier Valley area³³²¹ and Jane (Lytle) Clifford (see #53) and her New Jersey and Indiana County, Pennsylvania, Lytles. But I can not make a connection. Jennie Lytle who married William Barr McElroy was of the Ligonier Valley Lytles; she was a daughter of Hugh Hamill Lytle (1820-1888),³³²² who married Mary Hamill (probably a cousin?). In 1860 and 1870, Hugh, Mary and family (including daughter Jane/Jennie in 1860) were living in Ligonier Township.³³²³ Hugh's parents were Francis Lytle (II) (1795-1870) and Eliza (Hamill) Lytle (1798-1856). Both Francis (II) and Eliza (Hamill) Lytle are buried in the Antiochian Village Cemetery, Fairfield Township, Westmoreland County.³³²⁴ Francis's (II) parents were Francis Lytle (I) (born circa 1760) and Jeanette (Dudgeon) Lytle. Francis was the progenitor of the Ligonier-Fairfield Counties Lytles, coming from County Tyrone, Ireland, to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in the 1790s.³³²⁵

Although I cannot find a direct connection between the Ligonier-Fairfield Lytles and our Jane Lytle, there are remote connections between the Ligonier-Fairfield Lytles and our Cliffords. Francis Lytle (II), see above, had a sister Nancy Lytle (1786-1865), who married Thomas Smith (Jr.) (1778-1856). One son of Thomas and Nancy (Lytle) Smith was Francis Smith (1809-1898); he married Mary Brown, born circa 1813,³³²⁶ and they had son Thomas Smith (1840-1885). This Thomas Smith married Margaret Elder (1848-1918) and they had daughter Alice Smith who married Chal Dick Clifford (#1003). Another child of Thomas and Nancy (Lytle) Smith was Isabella Smith. She married James Richards. They had a daughter Jessie Richard who married Nelson Clifford (#1262).³³²⁷

McElroy was born circa 1883 in Iowa (his parents were listed born in Pennsylvania); married Isabel Linn; born circa 1885 in North Dakota (her parents were born in Wisconsin). Their children listed in the 1920 census (all born in Washington) were (1) Linn McElroy (son), born circa 1910; (2) Lyle McElroy, born circa 1913; and (3) Carrol J. McElroy (son), born circa 1914. Also in the household in 1920 was Samuel Linn, born circa 1865 in Wisconsin, "father" (of Isabel.).

BENJAMIN⁷ FRANKLIN MENOHER (James⁶, John⁵ Menoher, Jane⁴ Clifford, Charles³, James², unknown Clifford¹); born 1 April 1862 in Iowa; died 26 January 1951; on 1 March 1888, Benjamin married LORENA HAMILTON; born 13 April 1869 either in Illinois or Indiana; died 22 May 1950. She was a daughter of William and Francis (Allen) Hamilton.³³³⁰ Benjamin and family lived in Iowa. In 1920 Benjamin, Lorena and daughter Grace were living in Nodaway Township, Page County, Iowa.³³³¹ In 1930, Benjamin and Lorena were living by themselves in Clarina Township, Page County, Iowa (page 21B; no occupation was listed for Benjamin. A biography of their daughter, Ruth, indicates they also spent some time in Louisiana.

 

Children of Benjamin and Lorena (Hamilton) Menoher:

	2061	i.	Ruth8 Menoher; born 17 August 1893; died in January 1987,3332 at age 93. Ruth was a home economist. According to an undated biography, "Who's who in Nebraska-Lancaster County,"3333 Ruth was born (no date given) in Lake Charles, Louisiana, a daughter of B. F. and Lorena (Hamilton) Menoher. She graduated from Bedford (Taylor County), Iowa, High School in 1912 and Kansas State College 1919. She first taught high school in Villisca, (Montgomery County?) Iowa, and was principal of Sharpsburg, (Taylor County) Iowa, High School from 1920-1926. In 1928 she became home adviser for the Iowa-Nebraska Light and Power Company of Lincoln, Nebraska. Amongst her many achievements, she was president of the Institutional Directors and Dietitians Club, and councilor to Nebraska Home Economics Association. One of her articles was "Make wash day easy," which appeared in McCall's magazine, 1936. Ruth reported her hobbies to be driving, outdoors, travel, reading and collecting stationary.

Grace Elizabeth Menoher; born 26 October 1906 in Taylor County, Iowa; died 28 November 1978 in Waterloo, Iowa; buried in Cedar Valley Memorial Cemetery; married, 12 October 1934, Lloyd Ernest Boileau; born 6 November 1903 in Washington, Iowa; died 30 April 1994 in Cedar Falls, Iowa; buried in Cedar Valley Memorial Cemetery. Lloyd and Grace had three children: (1) Merry Elizabeth Boileau, (2) Lloydonna (Sue) Boileau, and (3) James Menoher Boileau. James Menoher Boileau married Mary Wong; their children: (a) Kevin David Boileau, (b) Todd William Boileau, and (c) Alan Paul Boileau. James Boileau provided information on the Menohers and is author of "Descendants of John Menoher."3334

WILLIAM⁷ EDWIN MENOHER (James⁶, John⁵ Menoher, Jane⁴ Clifford, Charles³, James², unknown Clifford¹); born 6 January 1864 in Fairfax, Iowa; died 2 December 1957; on 20 May 1914, he married ELLA WEEKS; born 20 February 1875 in Kansas; died 17 July 1960.³³³⁵ Ella died in Palm Beach, Florida.³³³⁶ In 1896, William was associated with the firm of Menoher and Pilcher, the editors and publishers of The Lincoln Republican.

William E. Menoher of the firm of Menoher & Pilcher, editors and publishers of The Lincoln Republican, is supposed to be a confirmed bachelor. Other Lincoln bachelors have astonished the natives, why should not he? This gentleman is a very early riser and no other inhabitant is on street early enough to see Mr. Menoher come down town. He is a lawyer and a University graduate. Is a Methodist and teaches a class in Sunday school. Ladies, will you longer hesitate?

In 1930, William, Ella, and child Betty J. were living in Lake Worth, Palm Beach, Florida (page 16B), where William was enumerated as a real estate agent.

In 1880, James, Mary and family (including James's father James Martin, Sr., born circa 1796) were living in Waldwick Township, Iowa County, Wisconsin, where James was enumerated as a farmer. In 1900, the family was Waterman Township, O'Brien County, Iowa, where James r. was listed as a farmer.³³³⁹

Ann was not listed in Lytle (1909), but was listed as a child of Cornelius and Dorcas in the 1870 federal census for St. Clair Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.³³⁵⁰ In 1900, the family was in St. Clair Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania (page 2A), where Francis was farming. Also in the family in 1900 was Dorcas Ruffner, mother-in-law, widow. In 1920, Frank (enumerated as a farmer), Annie and children Robert H. (enumerated as a clerk in a bank office) and Mary A. were living in St. Clair Township, Westmoreland County.³³⁵¹

BENJAMIN⁷ CLIFFORD (or COVODE)³³⁵⁷ HULL (Margaret⁶ Brady, Mary⁵ Reed, Sarah⁴ Clifford, Charles³, James², unknown Clifford¹); born 7 February 1861 in Pennsylvania; died 6 May 1943;³³⁵⁸ buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, St Clair Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania; married, 22 July 1884, SADIE DECKER; born 6 February 1862 in Pennsylvania; died 27 June 1952; buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery.³³⁵⁹ They lived in New Florence, Westmoreland County. Benjamin was killed in Conemaugh, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, by an "electric car."

In 1900, the family was living in St. Clair Township, Westmoreland County (page 2A), where Benjamin was farming. In 1920 and 1930, Benjamin, Sadie and children Bertha, Juliet, and Lavenia were still living in St. Clair Township, Westmoreland County, where Benjamin was enumerated as a farmer.³³⁶⁰ In 1920 and 1930, the family was living next door to Benjamin's sister Sallie (Hull) Dewitt and her family.

DEWITT; born 16 March 1865; died 30 November 1949.³³⁷⁰ Both Sally and Stewart are buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery, St. Clair Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.³³⁷¹

In 1910, 1920 and 1930, the family was living in St. Clair Township, Westmoreland County. In 1920 Stewart was enumerated as a farmer; in 1930, he was a township road supervisor.³³⁷²
