COUNSELLOR
(VOLUNTEER)
The Counsellor:
Must
be at least 16 years of age and at least two years older than the oldest
camper.
Must
pass all required training programs.
With
the co-counsellor, assumes 24 hour care of six to eight campers of various
age groups. This includes the
health, safety and spiritual well-being of campers to the limit of the
Counsellor’s ability.
Is
comfortable working in a Christian environment, having developed a solid
understanding of the aims and philosophy of United Church camp ministry (see
Mission Statement).
Is
comfortable working in a rustic setting which challenges both one’s
physical and mental powers.
Is
in good health.
Has good communication skills and is able to express his/her thoughts clearly.
Has
an enthusiastic, friendly manner.
Can
take control in an emergency or urgent situation without panic.
Duties
include:
Ensuring
that camp policies and rules are observed and enforced at all times.
Modelling
camp rules and caring, nurturing behaviour.
Leading
program activities for which adequate training is provided, with the support
of the other staff.
Working
under varying levels of supervision.
Attending
staff meetings, participating in all areas of camp life, operation and
maintenance to a reasonable limit.
Program
and resource planning in collaboration with the Director and colleagues.
Ensuring
a full understanding of all emergency procedures and participation in
regular drills.
Ensuring
a safe nurturing environment in which campers may explore their own faith.
Developing
a good relationship with campers and staff.
Informing the Director and/or immediate supervisor immediately of abuse disclosures and ensure the Ministry for Children and Families is informed.
Participating
in the evaluation process.
Counsellors
are expected to take part in the Leadership Training Program put on by the
Program Director prior to the camping season.
Counsellors are also expected to remain on the camp site at all times
during the camp unless permission is other wise granted by the Director.
