Connor (Swamp Rat!) Walsh and his weapon of choice ...

special operations somewhere in North America!

the Fa Mas F1

Well after owning the G3 SG/1 for all of two weeks and never having shot it in mock anger, I have sold it to "Barricade" Dave and replaced it with the Fa Mas F1!

The Fa Mas (Fusil Automatique, Manufacture d'Armes de St. Etienne) if the standard battle rifle of the French army and when introduced in 1979 quickly got pinned with the nickname le Clairon, "The Bugle"! For more information on the real steel Fa Mas check out the Remtek Arms review.

So why does Dave have a G3 and Matt (and therefore Connor!) have a Fa Mas?

Well there's a few things really.

Firstly there's ergonomics:

Dave can't own any weapon that has not been upgraded with every battery using device that is available to man. The Fa Mas is configured in what is called a "Bullpup" configuration, which means that unlike the a standard rifle configuration (handle-action-magazine), the Fa Mas has the magazine placed to the rear of the weapon behind the handle (magazine-action-handle). While this makes the overall rifle very short with a barrel length comparable or in fact longer than the G3, you are left with very little room to add extra equipment such as ... Grenade Launchers, laser aiming modules, flashlights and the like. Also Dave's a big guy and I don't think that he was really comfortable holding the Bullpup.

Secondly there's upgradability:

The Fa Mas utilises an older upgraded 560 motor to power the main spring of the gun. The 560 is a high speed, low torque motor which gives the Fa Mas a really great rate of fire but means that the poor little engine cannot power the heavier springs that can be added to the guns to increase velocity. The G3 on the other hand has a slower engine that can pull more weight therefore allowing it to accept the heavier springs which will allow the G3 to out range my Fa Mas on the field.

Lastly there's the "coolness" factor:

Any body that has seen Dave play knows that he is not called "Barricade" Dave because he likes to camp behind cover. Dave is more than likely to be standing out in the open laying down a stream of paint while others "barricade" themselves behind Dave! Remember Dave's Credo ...

Dave does not hide.

Dave does not hide his gun.

Dave wants everybody to hide from his gun!

Meanwhile, I saw the Fa Mas, I fell in love with the Fa Mas, I had to have the Fa Mas! Ever since I first looked into Airsoft the Fa Mas has been my first choice for an AEG. I like it's odd looks and I've always been a sucker for the bullpup rifles.

I also noticed that the majority of the fellows attending the airsoft games used the M4 carbine (a shortened M16 variant) or the MP 5 series submachine gun and I wanted to be different. Also there is the insane rate of fire that I mentioned earlier. 1,000 rounds per minute! On another web site a guy referred to the Fa Mas as the "Funky French BB Pisser!" Although I'm thinking that there must be a cooler title out there somewhere, I can't wait to lay a burst down range at some poor unsuspecting target.

My Famas with tracer unit.

My Famas compared to an MP5 SD6 with stock extended.

Would you believe the the barrel on the Famas is more than twice the length of the SD6? The wonders of the "Bullpup" design, 229 mm to my 470mm. Famas barrel.
