I have discovered that the beautiful purring or throbbing sound produced by some basses is not a product of the instrument itself, but is a result of careful setup of the tailpiece. By lengthening or shortening the tailpiece wire, the short length of string on the other side of the bridge can be tuned to produce a note two octaves and one fourth higher than the playing portion of the string. This stops the harsh harmonics often heard near the tailpiece & allows the instrument to develop a truly full & warm sound.
