Trestle
Hole on the Deschutes River
(1/2.
April; Jim, Peter and Claudia)
If
you like play spots, you have to check this out: Went to Trestle
at the Deschutes last weekend
|
|
Waypoints:
Seattle, Yakima, Maryhill, Biggs/OR, plus 50 km on back roads.
7 hours driving.
Beautiful
basalt column canyon, sagebrush country. First taste of the summer.
Blue sky and 24 oC. Level was 9400-9500 on the Deschutes/Moody
gauge. From what I've read at the DKCC
webpage , it's not as good under 8500, and seems to get a
bit scary in the 10-11k range.

Pete
going for the Blunt
|
At this level Trestle is a big V-wave with two spinning pockets
and tongue in the middle which sometimes greens out (kept the line-up
moving). The pocket on the left (surfers left) had a steep rail,
and people were doing blunts and (rare) backstabs off it. Compared
to Skooks Trestle requires somewhat advanced technique to stay in.
Pete was doing spins till he got dizzy and got pretty reliable blunts.
Jim and I were having the spinning fest. A few wathunks and windowshades
thrown in for free. |
| Saturday
we started around 9 am, four guys were already going at it. By noon,
the crowd had grown to about 30 people, and we left soon.
Second
day we started 6:15 am and had Trestle to us for 30 min, and left
by 11 am, crowd-level was around 25-30 again. Good thing it is running
all the time, not like Skooks only for a few hours. Haven't seen
so many xxx and foreplays in one spot. Petes Gliss and couple of
X's were the oldest boats around. Two Mr Clean, one Ultraclean,
bunch of Z's. One Vengeance, maybe one Medieval. The one Inazone
230 didn't perform all that well (maybe it was the paddler). XXX
are definitely the winners. |

You
will need a river access pass and several small official camping
sites are available about 10 km upstream on the Deschutes (river
right). |
