Our Program: Preparing for the School Years


7:30 a.m. Centre opens
7:30 - 9:45 Free play indoors: large muscle room, dramatic playroom, small muscle room, and unstructured art activities.
9:45 Snack
10:00 - 11:45 Children separate into age-structured groups for snack (provided by the centre) and “circle time.” Circle is a structured time for learning about interesting weekly topics, singing songs, and playing games in a focused setting.
11:00 - 12:00 Outdoor play: tricycles, climbing, sandbox, running, balls, neighbourhood walks, short outings to Craigdarroch Castle, Government House, Stadacona Park.
11:45 Youngest children come in for lunch (provided by parents).
12:00 Older children come in for lunch (provided by parents).
12:30 - 1:00 Bathroom routine: tooth brushing, face washing, etc.
12:45 Lunch-time program children are picked up.
1:00 - 2:00 Rest time for full-time children. Those who are awake at 2:00 will get up for quiet activities.
2:30 - 3:30 Outdoor play (indoor if it’s very rainy).
3:30 - 3:45 Snack (provided by centre).
3:45 - 5:00 Outdoor play, self-selected activities.
5:00 - 5:15 Informal circle time (stories, etc.)
5:30 p.m. Centre closes.

On specific dates set out in the monthly calendar of events, each group participates in a range of special activities that may include music and movement, French, and computer education.

On specific dates announced in advance, children take part in field trips. Recent field trips have included Willows Beach, the Pumpkin Patch, and Beacon Hill Petting Zoo. Transportation is by foot or on city buses. Resource people (police, health nurse, music teacher, parents, etc.) also visit the centre from time to time.
