The Yukon Quest

By W.M. Frenchy De Rushe, 1986

The Yukon Quest is a measured test
Of man and dog versus trail.
But more than that it's a statement
Of the strong will not to fail.

Where the musher stands, not against the land,
But against unspoken fear...
The bitter cold, and the loneliness,
And silence that hurts to hear!

The Quest is more than finishing first,
It's more than how slow or how fast;
It's a thousand miles on the Winter trail,
Where a winner may finish last.

The men and the women who live for the trail,
For the huskies' lonesome call,
And the bone weary camps at the end of the day;
They'd sell their souls for it all!

They love, and they live it, and 12 months each year,
They give it their very best,
And they dream of the long, lonesome trail ahead
Once again on the Yukon Quest!

Song of the Husky

Ray Mackler, 1986

With waving tails, the tundra trails
and spruce-clad hill we roam.
We pull the sled, our master's bed,
his home away from home.

For a bed of snow in a campfire's glow
and a frozen fish to eat,
We're on our way before the day,
the miles flow 'neath our feet.

We sing at night to the Northern Light
and when the blizzards come
We face the blinding, stinging snow
and bring our trapper home.

For we give our all to our master's call
if need be till we fall.
True to our breed, our master's need,
is our destiny, price and law.
