Once again, the off-season saw several free agents change teams. After eleven seasons in Vancouver, Mattias Ohlund was signed by Tampa Bay. The Canucks signed a few players, including veteran forward Mikael Samuelsson and backup netminder Andrew Raycroft. The veteran core was largely intact, led by forwards Daniel and Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler, and Alex Burrows, defensemen Willie Mitchell, Sami Salo, and Kevin Bieksa, and Roberto Luongo in net.

The team began the season with a three game losing streak, tying the club record. By mid-December, the Canucks had improved to a solid 20-16-0 on the season. Looming on the horizon was a monster road trip surrounding the Olympics in Vancouver. The Canucks would play 14 games away from GM Place and go 45 days between home dates. Needing to improve their record, they went on a tear, going 14-2-2 by the end of January. Vancouver played well on their extended road trip. Halfway through the trip, several players joined their nation's teams and played in the Olympics, highlighted by Roberto Luongo's gold medal (Canada) and Ryan Kesler's silver (US). The Canucks finished the season in fine form, once again taking the Northwest Division title.

As the regular season wound down, Henrik Sedin found himself in a race for the NHL scoring crown. In the team's final game, he recorded a hat-trick and added an assist to finish with a team-record 112 points. This was enough to win the Art Ross Trophy and, based on his performance, the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player.

With home ice advantage for the playoffs, the Canucks met the Los Angeles Kings in the first round. The two teams split the first games in Vancouver, each winning in overtime. In a series where the Canucks were unable to kill penalties, they finally learned to stay out of the box and won the final three games of the series to move on. In the second round, they met the eventual Stanley Cup champions in Chicago. The Canucks surprised the Blackhawks, taking the first game easily and jumping out to an early lead in the second game. Chicago started rolling, winning game two and the next two games in Vancouver. The Canucks played an inspired game five to avoid elimination, but finally fell in six games.
