Suzuki~ While Suzuki hasn't been in the same league as Honda and Yamaha in importing smaller scooters, they've definitely jumped in with both feet with the introduction of the 650 cc Burgman scooter. The 400cc Burgman has arrived at a much more reasonable price of  $7899 compared to the over $10000 for the 650.  They also offer 125 and 250 Burgmans worldwide but not in Canada.

Honda~ The 50cc Jazz and Ruckus are still available and, as well,  the 250cc "big Ruckus"($6999) . You'll have to go to the US to buy a 250cc Helix. however The 250cc Reflex is  in showrooms  and, in my mind, is much more practical for Canadian riding conditions than the "Big Ruckus" although the price tag is considerable . If frequent highway riding with two people is going to be on the agenda, then the 400cc scooters may be more to your advantage  .  Honda also has the big 600cc Silverwing  which is big enough to be called an automatic motorcycle in my opinion and, at $10,299 well beyond what could be called a "scooter".

Yamaha ~  Check out the new "C Cubed" XF50 50cc scooter and my thoughts on the "News" page. If practicality is the reason you're buying a scooter the XF50 has all other 50cc scooters beat hands down.  With the 2006 BWS they're the only Japanese manufacturer offering a two stroke scooter that is easily modified for increased speed. The 50cc Vino is now a four stroke motor.  The  Vino 125cc four stroke is thousands of $ less than comparable 150cc scooters being offered ($3599 CAN MSRP) by the European manufacturers.  The 125 Vino is manufactured in Taiwan and the Yamaha Taiwan web page is here. Hard to say whether its a new design or a re-packaging of the Riva 125 from the 80s and 90s. The engine is definitely not the same as the newer 125 cc Yamaha Cygnus being offered in Japan and worldwide.  Paul from Vancouver had graciously penned a "driving impressions" at this page. Local owners have reported a trouble free riding experience after years of riding.
The 2006 400cc Majesty (read CMG online road test) is  available at $7999, a similar price to the 400cc Suzuki Burgman scooter  Two 400 ccc scooters to choose from and both with good reps; sort of a win/win situation.

Piaggio- They're finally back and Vespa fans are consulting bank managers as we speak for the extra money required to own the 250cc GTS($7499), LX(50cc-$4399, 150cc-$5699) and 200cc Granturismos ($6899) now on showroom floors at your local "Vespa boutique".  The importer has opened in Toronto and retailers are opening in major cities across Canada. As far as BC goes, we have them in Vancouver and Victoria. Besides the Vespa range,  Piaggio also offers number of other scooters that are well worth the look ( BV250, BV500, Fly 150 X9 and Typhoon 50 ).  If you have a lot of potholes or rough road surfaces in your neck of the woods, the larger 16 inch weels of the BV 250 and 500 models are sure to make riding less hectic.

There seem to be a lot of Chinese (PRC and taiwanese) scooters showing up in various locations . Some are from respected brands such as Kymco, Eton etc that were previously companies that supplied  the Japanese "big three" with  engines and other parts.  Do not make any hasty judgements but rather look at each scooter to see what parts they use and if , years down the road, you will be able to get parts and service.  Some use the same major parts (belts, roller weights, engine gaskets, lights etc) as other brands although body parts seem to be fairly brand specific.

Not enough of choice? Murray from Alberta has also written an article on how to import a recent model scooter. Click here to read details of how to import a scooter from the US without waiting for a Manufacturer. Click here

While not a manufacturer, Canadian Motorcycle guide Online has a section outlining the manufacturers offeringsin Canada and is worth a read. Many new scooters are due to be imported so finally theres going to be a selection of larger scooters in Canada.  Yeehaaa!
