Fitting a Honda Vision cylinder to a Honda Elite (1988 - 1993)

Oct. 2002~

At the date of this writing I haven't yet identified what other model(if any) of Honda had the same cylinder as the 1988 to 1993 Elite north american Honda. If you had a 1994 and newer Elite, a Dio model cylinder would fit but if you are looking for a "big bore" cylinder for the 88-93 model the following is a way of getting increased displacement using a "Vision" cylinder kit.  The picture at left shows the difference between the cylinders where they mate with the crankcase and the shape of the cut-outs is important because this is where the fuel mixture flows on its way to the cylinder.  What follows is excerpted from an e-mail received from Roman H of Chicago who successfully modified a Gilardoni Honda Vision aluminium cylinder to fit his 1988 Elite. This may not work with all aftermarket cylinders as the mating surface on the 88-93 Elite was much larger than the previous Hondas (see the photos at the bottom of the page). Roman is a professional model builder and has the necessary skills and tools (dremel) however the procedure seems straightforward for those of us who are amateurs and have a modicum of patience and motor skills. If you're tool deprived and can't follow simple instructions don't try this at home~ get the shop that's selling you the cylinder kit to do it. Don't forget to send them a gasket from your scooter for them to work from.

Aluminum Big Bore Honda Vision cylinderWell, I got my 70 cc Gilardoni kit  from Dekker. It's an aluminum cylinder for a Vision.  The port openings on our Elite models (Roman has a 1988 Elite) is slightly different; ours are longer on the sides.  Since I have machine tools at my shop, it was no problem for me to make the openings longer to match the original configuration on the 50 cc cylinder. Pretty easy because it's aluminum.  It  took me a little under an hour to modify the ports on the aluminum cylinder. Even though I have a milling machine and lathe and such, it can easily be done with a Dremmel tool. Actually, what I first had done when I got the cylinder, was to mount it so I could check the fit. Perfect!  Then I decided to take the chance and start machining. The ports have the same ribs as in the 50 cc so I just had to remove some extra wall material, then with a Dremel tool, I fine tuned and smoothed the opening. I just had to make a new gasket, got some material from a garage mechanic.  Yep! it runs and it's loud, and it's fast! I ran the scooter for a little while over the weekend. I had installed the 18/42 gear set and was testing to find out what rollers and what clutch adjustments might work best. I had 7.0 rollers in it the first time and the acceleration wasn't to great until after 15 mph. Then, whoosh! I was approaching  45 mph. I had room to spare on the throttle, so I think that if I had a little more street, I would of hit 50.

On his Leo Vinci SP3 exhaust, Roman had this to say:

Here is what I had to go through when I ordered an SP3 exhaust for the (1988) Honda LX. When I asked LeoVinci about which type of exhaust I could use, they immediately responded with the # 4442 exhaust. The exhaust is meant for a Dio model so it was made to mount directly to the front of the cylinder. My Honda LX ( Now I find out!) is a Vision model. The exhaust on the cylinder is out at an angle, about 45 degrees. This meant cutting the exhaust pipe at an angle that would best match the curving to the mounting bracket, then I had to weld it. A pretty decent job, but too tight! I came a bit too close to the fan cover and it suffered some melting. No harm done to the fan, there's enough clearance.  The correct model for the Vision is #4447. Actually, this is the easiest mod for the Honda 50, whether it be a Dio (SR 50) or Vision (Elite LX) Only $118.00 (US dollars) plus shipping. I used 7.0 rollers in mine and tweaked the clutch with stronger springs. I get over 41 mph. and pretty good acceleration from a  standing start position. The acceleration is much better from 10mph., it just zooms off, up to it's top speed.
