To receive a doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine, candidates must complete a rigorous four-year post-graduate training program with a three-year undergraduate prerequisite. This training involves: counselling, physical medicine (massage therapy, naturopathic manipulation), naturopathic medicine (nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine, traditional chinese medicine, acupuncture) basic medical sciences (anatomy, physiology, pathology, histology, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology), clinical medicine (lab diagnosis, radiology, gynecology, obstetrics, pediatrics, pharmacology, minor surgery, emergency medicine) and 1300 hours of clinical supervision. Hippocrates, considered the earliest predecessor of the naturopathic physician, formulated the concept of vis medicatrix naturae---"the healing power of nature." This concept has long been the core of indigenous medicine in many cultures around the world and remains one of the central themes of naturopathic philosophy to this day. Naturopathic Physicians treat both acute and chronic illnesses, and provide safe, natural alternatives to conventional medicines. |
