   May 2002 - The taxonomic order, common names and four-letter codes included in this web version of the Burnaby Lake Regional Park Bird Checklist published in early 1997 have been updated using the 7th edition of the American Ornithologists' Union (AOU) Check-List of North American Birds (AOU 1998) and its supplement (AOU 2000).

The following is a list of the bird species that have been recorded at Burnaby Lake Regional Park. The status of each species is indicated by an abundance level in each of four seasons. The standard four letter code is shown for each species.

Seasonal Occurrence
Sp = Spring (March - May)
S = Summer (June - late August)
F = Fall (late August - November)
W = Winter (December - February)

Relative Abundance
c = common [25 to 100 per day]
f = fairly common [5 to 25 per day]
u = uncommon [1 to 5 per day, with at least 10 records per year]
r = rare, but regular [1 to 10 records per year]
ca = casual [2 to 10 documented records in checklist area]
ac = accidental [only 1 documented record in checklist area during the specified season]
i = erratic/irregular [numbers fluctuate yearly from abundant to absent]

Extirpated Species

Three bird species once found at Burnaby Lake are now extirpated from the checklist area. Ruffed Grouse (RUGR), Barn Owl (BNOW) and Crested Myna (CRMY) may be found in suitable habitat still present in nearby areas.
