Creating VCD/SVCD with chapter menu

This guide will show you how to create a VCD or SVCD with chapter menus using Ulead DVD Movie Factory.  This program also supports DVD but I personally think this authoring program sucks for authoring DVD movies.  It does't work well with mpg files that have the pulldown enabled.  So all your movies must be encoded in 29.976 fps and it also doesn't support AC3 sound.  This program is not free but you can download the trial version which can be used for 30 days.  But there are ways of getting the full working version on the internet but you will have to figure that out on your own.  Please do not email me about getting the full version.

Step 1

After you launch the program, you should get this screen.  So select "Author menus".

Step 2

Here you can select the format of you movie.  For this guide I will choose SVCD but the procedure should be the same for VCD.  Also ignore the part where it says "The Others", that's just a saved project I was working on.  Press Next.

Step 3

Here you can add you MPEG files.  So just press the "Add MPEG File" button and select your movie.  If you want to create a scene selection menu, make sure you check the box on the bottom left corner.  Press Next.

Step 4

This is where you select your chapter points.  Simply move the red slider bar to the point where you want to create a chapter.  Then press the "Add: button.  Keep doing this until you've added all the chapters you want.  You can also use the time box above the slider.  Just click on it and enter the time and it will move the that scene in the movie.  If you want the exact chapter structure from the DVD movie, then you'll have to use ChapterXtractor.  For information on how to use it, read the guide on creating VCD with Chapters.  ChapterXtractor should give you all the chapter points in the movie and all you have to do is look at the time the chapter starts and move the slider bar to that time.

You can also add an introduction video that plays before the scene selection menu comes up.  If you want to do that, you need to check the box on the upper right corner.  Press Next.

Step 5 - Optional

If you didn't check the box to add an introduction video, you will not get this screen next, so go onto the next step.  If you did check the box, then this is where you select your introduction video file.  So just click on the "Browse" button and locate your introduction video file.  Press Next.

Step 6

Here you can preview you chapter menus and typing a name for each chapter by clicking on the text.  You can also choose from various background images or you can add your own if you want.  You can also select the background music that will be played during the menu screens.  It is also possible to use the background music used in the DVD movie during the menu screens.  I'm not going to tell you step by step how to do it but I will give you the basic idea on how to do it.  If you're experienced in this stuff, then this should be easy for you.  For newbies its going to be hard.  First you have to encode the vob file for the menu screen.  This file is usually called something like VTS_0X_0.VOB, with the last digit being the important one.  If its zero, then its most likely the vob file for the menu screens.  After you encode it, open it in TMPGEnc and cut out the part for the chapter selection.  The demux that video file you just cut out and you should have the audio file for the menu.  Now all you have to do is select that audio file by pressing the "Background music" button.  Press Next.

Step 7

This is where you get to test everything out to see if it works.  If something needs to be changed, then hit the "Back" button to make changes.  Otherwise, click "Next" to go on.

Step 8

At the top you can select a folder where temporary file will be saved.  Then select your CD recorder and the burning speed.  You can also type a label for the disc if you want.

There's also Advanced SVCD options (shown below)  that's only used when making a SVCD.

You should select the standard compliant format but if for some reason you DVD player won't play your SVCD, then select the legacy SVCD compatible format.

Step 9

All we have to do now is press the "Create SVCD" button and wait for you CD to finish burning.
