Encoding Video

VirtualDub should be installed in the folder where you have Gordian Knot installed.  Once you've got that running, open the avs file Gknot created for you.  Then go to the video tab and select fast recompress.

Next you want to select compression and a new window should open.

Select the XviD codec from the list and press the configure button.

Choose 2 pass- 1st pass, then press the advanced options button.  All of the settings for XviD from here on are the settings I use that I find works best for me.  You do not have to use these settings if you don't want to.

In the Global tab, you can set the motion search precision to 6 - ultra high and the quantization type to H.263.

Proceed to the Two Pass tab

Here you specify where you want the 1st pass stats to be saved.

Proceed to the Credits tab

The purpose of this part is to compress the end credits of the movie since there's no point if encoding it at a high quality and making the file size bigger.  So set the frame number where the the credits begins and the frame number where the credits end.  So lets say the credits began at 60 minutes into the movie, and you were encoding the movie at 23.97 fps.  You take 60 minutes and multiply that by 60 seconds and you get 3600.  Then take that number and multiply it by 24 and you get 86400.  That number is the frame  number that the credits begin.  To figure out the end frame number, you do the same thing only this time you  use the entrie movie length instead of the time where the credits begin.

Then set the I and P frame quantizer to 20.  The press ok to everything.

Now we are done configuring the settings for the 1st pass and now we want to save it.

Name your file name and make sure you check the box to add operation to job list to that it doesn't start encoding right away.  After saving it, we need to configure XviD for the second pass.

This time select 2 pass - 2nd pass Int.  Also enter the desired size of your movie.  To do this, you can use the MiniCalc program that comes with XviD when you install it.  The program is pretty straight forward so I don't think I need to explain how to use that.

This is setup almost the same as the first time except this time you can choose modulated as the quantization type.

Next we go to the

Here you want to change the I and P frame quantizer to 2.  I've heard that using 1 will give your crappy video quality.

Proceed to the Two Pass tab

The default settings worked good for me so I didn't change anything here.  Just make sure the 1st pass stats points to the location where you have it saved.

Proceed to the Alt Curve tab

I am still not exactly sure as to what curve aggression does.  As far as I know, it determines how fast the codec will adapt to seen changes such as from low bitrate scenes to fast high bitrate scenes.  There has been a lot of discussion as to what this does and what the best settings to use are but nobody really seems to know.  But even at the default settings you get really good results.  The settings shown on the picture is what I used for my first movie and it turned out really good.  So you can either use the settings I used or try experimenting on your own to see what gives you the best results.  When I find out more information, I will update this section.

Now we are done setting up XviD for the second pass so press ok for everything and  save your movie again, and don't forget to check the box to add operation to job list.  Once you've done that press the F4 key and the job list window will open.

All you have to do now is press the start button and wait for you movie to finish encoding.

When your movie is done, we have to multiplex the audio and video together.
