River Loop Trail

River Loop Trail
On April 13 2004, the Wild Rose Ramblers met at the John Janzen Nature Centre for the first ramble of 2004. Pat took us around the River Loop Trail which goes around Fort Edmonton. The weather was chilly - about 1°C in light snow. No leaves on the trees yet. We saw some tree holes made by pileated woodpeckers, and some witches broom in various trees. We also saw red female flowers of the beaked hazelnut, but just barely, because they are only about an eighth of an inch in diameter. Apparently hazelnuts can be picked in August, although Pat says they like to leave them for the squirrels.
