Emily Murphy Park

On May 4 2004, we met at Emily Murphy Park (located east of Groat Bridge, on the south side of the North Saskatchewan River) and walked to Kinsmen Sports Centre and back. Emily Murphy was the first female police magistrate in the British Empire, and was also instrumental in gaining women legal recognition as "persons".

Along the path there is a place where coal can be seen in the exposed bank. A sign explains that the orange upper layer is where the coal has burned in place, and the black lower layer is unburned fractured coal.

Burdock is growing under the east end of the High Level Bridge. The burs are nature's version of velcro. Trees generally are showing a lot more green than they were last week.

We saw mallards, gulls, and juncos (and one mosquito).
