Psychology Resources

The following is a series of quality, annotated resources which have proved very helpful to those wishing to commence research into a particular area of psychology. For convenience, I have grouped the sites into numerous categories, and have listed the sites in alphabetical order. (Hint: To find specific terms, click on the subject category and then use the "Find" feature in your web browser. Please note also that this is actually a two-page document, even though it looks like a one-page document.) In order to expand your online searching, I urge you to consult also the various online categorical directories, search engines, and abstracts databases listed on this page.

As I come across other helpful sites, I will add their addresses to this list. If before I do you notice that any of the links are dead (or, worse yet, that these sites require a fee!), please send me a me a short note. Best of luck during your searching!

CAUTION:

The information provided by the following sites is for educational purposes only and does not replace discussions with and/or diagnoses by appropriate healthcare providers. If you or someone you know is experiencing difficulties of a psychological nature, see your family physician (alternatively, see my Associations links, which will provide phone numbers of organisations that will be glad to direct you to the appropriate resources).

Thomas S. Szasz Site
http://www.szasz.com
Thomas Szasz is one of the most vocal and engaging critics of his profession, psychiatry. He questions what it is to be "mentally ill" and who decides what "mental illness" is. He is the one who suggested that "mental illness" is a myth---that the term was initially meant to be a metaphor, but eventually became reified and got a life of its own. He is particularly critical of involuntary psychiatric treatment. I think Szasz is a crucial figure in the history of psychology/psychiatry. On this site you will find all sorts of material on the man and his ideas, including articles, transcripts of debates, correspondence, and links to useful resources.

Ludwig Wittgenstein Online (William L. Kernan)
http://www.geocities.com/wittgensteinonline/
Excellent resource on the philosopher who suggested that the meaning of a word has less to do with what it represents in reality and more to do with the context—the "language game"—in which the word is used. Wittgenstein's "ordinary language philosophy" has been used by some psychologists to question the way in which we use (and, indeed, create) ambiguous garden-variety terms like personality, self, depression, and psychopathy. Indeed, for Wittgenstein, many of the philosophical problems (which I suggest cannot be disentangled from the problems faced by psychology) are due mainly to confusions and ambiguities caused by language. To solve these problems, Wittgenstein says we need to focus on a proper analysis of language itself.

The Center offers one of the most comprehensive eating disorders programs in North America. Along with information about the program, you will find detailed facts on all aspects of eating disorders, plus a listing of additional reading materials and other online resources. The site hosts two questionnaires (under "What You Need to Know About Eating Disorders") designed to help give a preliminary idea about the presence of symptoms (in you or someone you know) that indicate the need for an evaluation by a psychiatrist. These tests do not replace a formal psychiatric or medical evaluation. A highly-recommended site.

Thomas S. Szasz Site
http://www.szasz.com
