We want to be able to read and write music as well as we read and write language.

We expect to understand written language without hearing it out loud first.

We expect to be able to write down meaningful sentences that we hear.

We don’t usually remember the process through which we learned to read language.  It did involve repetition (work?) but it also involved playing with letters, playing with words, and playing with the sounds they make.
