Cowling fitting done !

Finally finished fitting the cowl. Turned out OK and the best part is that all the attach pins go in and out very easy.

I modified the way the long attach pins are installed. The plans call for the pins to be inserted from the front and held in place with a screw on a piece of hinge matieral. I drilled a hole through the firewall and inserted a piece of 1/4 in tubing. The pin is inserted from inside the aircraft. This makes for a cleaner install, prevents anyone from removing the cowl if they don't have access to the inside of the aircraft, and insures that the pin is not going to come loose and go into the back of the prop. This has happened on more than one RV, including a friends RV-6 with a constant speed Hartzell. It cost a lot to repair, but fortunately he found the damage on a walk around.

The oil door worked out quite well. I sanded the epoxy flush with the door, peeled back the tape, and opened the door. Did a little finishing work and the results are very good.
Cut the holes in the bottom of the cowl for the air louvers. Almost finished the cowling...!!!

Would you believe cowling....

Finally finished fitting the cowling to the plane. The top back hinges were a bit of a challange and it was my own fault. Nuff said.
I cut the oil filler hole and mounted the door on the hinge. The fit was pretty bad so I taped the edges of the door and added epoxy to the groove oround the door. I am expecting a bit of a battle to get the door open after the epoxy sets, but thats another day. Picture is the door as it sits now.

Still on the cowling

Rivited and epoxied the rear cowling hinges to the cowlings. The epoxy takes a few hours to set up so I think I'll take a few hours off.

Still have to trim the sides of the cowling to match top to bottom.

More cowl fitting

A good day. Bottom cowl is ready to rivit mounting hinges in place. Top cowl is ready to drill mounting hinge to cowl.

Also finished the details on the nose wheel fairing. Turned out good.
I wonder if Cessna uses as much duct tape per airplane as I do ? What would we do without it....

Fitting cowling

Started to fit the top cowling today.

Gear leg fairings are done. Just have some minor clean up to do on the nose gear wheel pant.

I finally was able to rent a hangar this week. I am approaching the time when the plane will have to go to the airport for final assembly, and I had been unable to find a place. I had left word with a friend to keep an eye out, and he spotted a "for rent" sign on the hangar door. He called me, I called the fellow, and I got it. He told me he had seven calls for the hangar after i called.

Lasar Mags Installed

Finally received my second Lasar mag from Aerosport Power on the weekend. They loaned me their timing device so I could install and time them myself. Well, that was an experience. After three phone calls to Ted at Aerosport, we finally figured out that the gears on the back of the engine which drive the mags were in the wrong position, thus making it impossible to get the timing right. Since this was my first experience with mag installs, I was not aware that those gears were easily removable and could be repositioned so the mags could be timed. Once I got that sorted out, the timing went very well, and the two mags are now installed and timed.

The wiring harness which connects the mags to the controller has to go through the firewall. Of course, the harness comes pre-built with these huge connectors on the mag end, and an even bigger connector on the controller end. Had to cut a LARGE hole through the firewall to allow the plugs to fit through, then had to fab a cover to cover the hole. Bought a SS dinner plate from Princess Auto for $2.49 and used it for material for the cover.

Cover on right, wiring harness plugs below.
