High Falls Creek

May 22 2006 & May 19 2005

This is another hike that I've done twice, so I'll post pictures from both trips. Sadly, both times have been quite cloudy (I guess because this is a good early-season, rainy day hike), so I've never seen any good views of the Tantalus range from here. The first trip (2005) was with Mark and my Dad for Father's Day, and the second trip (2006) was with Jodi, Aviv, Eric and Alexi.

We got to the trailhead by driving for quite a while along a rough logging road in the Squamish Valley. Once there, we started to climb sharply up some very steep sections. Whoever built the trail has installed ropes and chains in some sections, which were useful to haul ourselves up some of the steeper sections. After not too long, we came to a great view of the falls themselves. They are indeed high, and very impressive.

From there we climbed further to a lookout with a nice panoramic view of the Squamish Valley. When I was here with Mark and my Dad, we stopped for a snack, but on the second trip we made it a full lunch stop.

After the break spot, we climbed even higher, to a point above the top of the falls. There were still steep sections of trail here. In 2005 we decided to take it easy, and took a shortcut out to the logging road, where we hiked down in fairly good weather. The walk out on the logging road was long and boring, but easy.

In 2006, we continued on past the shortcut, to the end of the hike, which wasn't much further. There was a short scramble over some boulders and we came out at a slightly higher point on the logging road, with what would have been a great view, except for the increasingly heavy cloud cover. We started down the logging road, and quickly found ourselves in the middle of a torrential downpour, which kept up for the entire long and boring walk out. We were extremely soggy by the time we reached the car, but I guess that's a risk you run by hiking in May.
