Mosel Trip

May 23, 2004

KOBLENZ: We had a 4 day weekend, so we decided to go check out some towns along the Mosel. We started out by going straight to Koblenz, the town where the Rhine and Mosel converge. Our hostel was an old fortress way up on the hill, so we had awesome views just outside the front door. Apart from the hostel, and the German Corner (point where the 2 rivers meet - you can walk out there), there's not much to do in Koblenz.

LUXEMBOURG: So after seeing all of Koblenz in one day, we decided to go to Luxembourg. That's the 15th country I've seen now! Luxembourg was the highlight of the trip. It's built up on this huge rock, and it's got cliffs on every side. It's also tiny - about 40,000 people total - and they speak French there, so I was actually able to understand some of the things people were saying to us.

TRIER: Next day we went to Trier, a 2000 year old town on the Moselle that has a ton of Roman ruins. We had to go back to Koblenz to sleep that night, because Trier was all booked up.

MOSEL: On the last day we saw 2 castles. For Burg Eltz we walked 45 minutes though the forest to get there, so we got a nice easy hike in. The castle itself is pretty impressive, and it's in the middle of nowhere too. THe second castle was Burg Rheinfels, in St. Goar, but we just stopped quickly because we had to take the train all the way back to Wuerzburg.
