Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Wine Fesitval, Afrika Festival

May 29 - 30, 2004

So this time it was a 3 day weekend. Bavaria has more public holidays than any other German state, so long weekends are pretty common. Another thing that's common is festivals here - 2 in one weekend this time! On Saturday we took a train to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, which is only about an hour away from Wuerzburg. It's a small medieval town - incredibly touristy - but still cool to see for a day. The old city is surrounded by medieval walls, so we walked around there for a while. We also went up the tower in the Town Hall, which gave us some good views of the city. There was also a Kriminalmuseum, were we saw all sorts of medieval torture instruments.

So after spending the day sightseeing, we were pretty tired. Then we heard about a Wine Festival happening downtown, so we decided we had to check it out. It was pretty cool - the entire town square was jammed with Germans sampling the local wine. There were so many people there it was hard to get anywhere. We met up with some other exchange students (Finns, Swedes, and a German), although it took us almost an hour to find a free table!

On Sunday we went to the Afrika festival. Basically it was African drums, music, food, arts & crafts, etc. I had some really good Egyptian food, and we almost bought some drums. Finally, on Monday, we were too tired to do anything, plus it was raining, so we went to see an Original Version (ie English) screening of 'Troy', but unfortunately since everything in Germany shuts down on Sundays we couldn't get to the theatre.
