Switzerland Hiking

July 10 - 12, 2004

Well, our weekend in Switzerland was awesome, the only downside was the car we rented. They didn't have any Audis, so we had to settle for a Mercedes. I mean, really, what are these car rental guys trying to pull? I was tempted to walk across the street to their competitor, but I suppose sometimes you just have to settle.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: After work we drove South. Due to navigator error, we got lost about three times (twice in Stuttgart), but finally got into Switzerland. We got into Baar around 2am, and quickly found my cousin's place. She's in Canada right now, so she was really nice and said that I could stay there if I wanted to see some of Switzerland. Next morning we were up really early, and one of my cousin's friends, Bio, took us on a hike about 40 minutes away from Baar. We drove up to 800m, and the peak was at 1900m, so there was some climbing involved. The views were fantastic, and the hike was about 2.5 hours up and 2 down, with some time relaxing in the sun at the top. The pictures really speak for themselves.

SUNDAY: Next morning we slept in, since it was raining on and off. But we were in Switzerland, so of course we had to go for at least a short hike. We went up Zugebar, a local mountain - well more of a hill, really. Still, it was good exercise, and we got of good view of the town. We got down around 4pm, saw a bit of Zug, and then started to drive home. On the way we stopped at the Rheinfells, a huge waterfall. They had observation booths carved out of the rock right next to the water, so you could go right up to it. It was pretty impressive. Then it was a much shorter (we knew the way now) drive back home to Wuerzburg.

So, those hikes were a nice warm up. Later in July I want to do something really challenging, like maybe something in Interlaken or Zermatt!
