Our Pet Ratz

Stewy - meet Stewy...

We have recently discovered that rats have been given a bad name. When people hear the word "rat", they automatically curl their upper lip, and go "ewwwwwwww!" When our mother told me we were thinking of getting rats for pets, I did the thing with my lip, and said, "ewwwwww, no no no!!" Now you'd think, being 12 years old, I would know better, but I along with everyone else, thought rats were nasty, and that gerbils, hamsters and mice, were the pets to get. But I was sadly mistaken. When we think of rats, we think of those big, ugly, black things rumaging through garbage, with the long snake-like tails. Yuk! I have since realized when I tell someone I have rats...I have to say "I have PET rats". Otherwise people tend to panic.

"But they're sooooooo cute!" After my initial reaction to its long tail, I discovered that rats are intelligent, clean and just love to be cuddled!!! We actually litter trained one of them, the first day!

We have two rats, both girls, (Stuart and Candi) that rush to the door of the cage whenever we enter the room. They can't wait to come out and play! They're no longer allowed on the floor though, after dad had to get out the staple gun, and reupholster our recliner chair, after Stuart decided to go on an adventure inside the chair. We have now made them a playground, on top of a bookshelf, which they seem to like, and don't jump off of.

If you're thinking of getting a pet, and your parents won't allow a dog or cat, then a rat is definately the way to go!!........ Brittany
