How To Wire-Up Computer Modems And Routers Using ADSL
Modems
Modems convert the digital signals produced by terminals and computers into analog signals. Telephone circuits are designed to carry analog signals, such as voice. Terminals and computers transmit data using digital signaling, whereas telephone circuits are designed to transmit analog signals. Modems convert digital signals to analog in order to transmit data over telephone circuits. The modem is a data set which modulate and demodulate signals.
The modem consists of a power supply, transmitter, and receiver. The unit contain a modulator, filtering, wave-shaping, and signal controlling circuitry.
Connecting a Modem
You will require cat5 wire to connect computers, modem and routers. Do not confuse this with the older cat3 wire; the cat5 wire has a blue outer
coat. The cat5 wire has 8 conductors and you will need RJ45 plastic connectors for the wire ends. The RJ45 plastic connectors are available at stores like Source stores and other computer stores. When you buy the connectors, always buy a couple extra in case you make a mistake or the connections do not take. If you do make a mistake, simple cut off the existing connector and try again.
.
To place the connectors on the cat5 wire; skin back the outer coating of the cat5 wire to about one inch, fan the conductors out with each color in the correct order, and then trim back to the correct length. Pay attention to the twisting of the wires and try to end up with the orange colored wires on the left, this will help in getting all the wires positioned in the correct order. To determine the correct length of the exposed wires, place the ends of the cat5 wire on top of the connector and judge the length so the crimped wire will end up with the outer protective coating under the crimp and the exposed leads reaching the end of the plastic connector. If possible, use the proper wire crimper for the RJ45 Connector. Some people are able to get away with regular pliers, small screwdriver and hammer; to set the brass pins and crimp the base of the connector to the wire. The brass pins should be set slightly lower than the plastic ridges of the connector.
With the connector in your hand and the retaining clip on the back side; the correct order of the wires is as follow.
Starting from the left, W/O, O, W/G, BL, BL/W, G, W/BR, BR.
The BL/W, W/BL, W/BR, BR, are not used, but install them in the connector with the rest of the wires.
The W/GR is transmit+
The GR is transmit-
The W/O is receive+
The O/WH is receive-
How To Hard Wire Your Computer To The Internet, Modem And Router
1/ With your computer near an existing telephone jack, run a normal 7 Ft.
telephone cord from the jack to the modem.
2/ Connect a RJ45 computer cable from the modem to the computer.(not a crossover cable which is reversed cable)
3/ Plug in the power pak to power up the modem.
4/ Turn on the computer.
5/ Follow the instructions of your provider.
How To Hard Wire Your Computer To The Router And other Computers
1/ To share the internet with other computers in the household, beside having a modem, you will need a router.
2/ Run a cat5 wire from the router to the location of each computer.
3/ You can run the cat5 wire directly into the input jack of the computer or
you can run the cat5 wire to a RJ45 wall jack; and then use a patch cord from the jack to the computer.
The cheapest route is to bypass the wall jack, as they are fairly pricey.
4/ Place a plastic RJ45 connector on each end of the cat5 wires. Use the color guide listed above.
The average router has output jacks for four or five computers.
