When you are familiar and feel confident at the simplest level,
then, explore all the options that are available to you in the GPS unit.

The eTrex is an inexpensive GPS, but just as accurate as any expensive GPS.
Because this is a basic unit and does not have all the "bells and Whistles"
you will find that the batteries will last a little longer than other more expensive GPS units.

When you are out in the back-woods try and find open spots where you are out of the trees
and have a clear view to the sky. If you are between hills, this can also prevent the GPS device
from finding three satellites, to get a fix on. Do not rely entirely on the GPS unit; look for visual
landmarks to guide you. Use the sun as a guide; if you are walking with the sun on your back,
then more than likely you will be facing the sun on your return trek. Keep in mind that the GPS unit
is electronic and could fail. The batteries may become too weak to power the GPS unit. It is also
a good idea to pack fresh batteries.
