Vons Company and History Information
Vons a supermaket chain is a division of Safeway Inc situated in southern California. Vons opened in 1908 and quickly grew to 87 stores by the year 1928. It was acquired by Safeway in 1930, the owners name was Skagg. Skaggs' sons re-entered the name Von's Grocery Store the same year. By 1948, self service was introduced; prepackaged meat and deli items were available for the public. By the year 1958 Vons doubled in size and acquired Shopping Bay Food Stores, which was its sixth largest competetor. In 1986 Vons offered a pharmacy along with it's own grocery line. In 1988 Safeway withdrew from southern California and sold most of its stores to Vons, in exchange for an ownership stake, whereby Safeway has control, causing Vons to operate as a subsidiary.
