15 Tips To Increase Gas Mileage

Ford Escape

If you are looking for information on how to increase the gas mileage of your vehicle,
you have come to the right place

15 ways to increase gas mileage in your vehicle

1/ You will get the best gas mileage by driving on hard pavement as opposed to gravel and dirt roads.

2/ Speeds of 55 mph can give you up to 20% better gas mileage than driving at speeds of 65 mph or more.
The faster you go, because of wind resistance, the lower the gas mileage becomes.

3/ When traveling at highway speeds, keep the windows closed to reduce air drag, as drag will slow you down and reduce your your gas mileage.

4/ Hard round tires roll best and give you the best gas mileage. In the winter reduce the tire pressure a bit as this will give you more traction and control. You will lose some gas mileage, but at this time of the year, it is not the time to skimp.

5/ Maintaining a steady speed makes for better gas mileage.

6/ Better to get your speed up on the level rather than trying to build up speed on an incline as this takes more fuel.

7/ Driving your vehicle in low gear at high RPMs, really eats up the gas; use a higher gear where you can.

8/ If you have manual shift, select the highest gear without overpowering the engine (jerking), as this will give you the best gas mileage.

9/ If possible keep the fuel tank filled to about half full, as this reduces weight and don't pack around things you don't need in the vehicle.

10/ Do not "ride" your foot on the brake, as this generated excess heat on the brake pads, causing them extreme wear, and at the same time reducing your gas mileage. If you need to use the brakes, pump them, as this will give you better control of the vehicle and reduce wear and save a little on the gas.

11/ When you see a red stoplight ahead, start coasting up to the light, rather than continuing up to it at normal speed and then having to brake heavily to stop.

12/ When parking in a parking lot, pull into a spot where you can drive straight out when you are ready to leave, rather than backing up first, as this uses more fuel.

13/ At least once a year replace or clean the air filter, as a dirty airfilter is like driving with the choke partly on all the time, reducing gas milage.

12/ If the engine runs rough or doesn't start well, get a tune-up, as a well maintained engine uses less fuel.
It doesn't hurt to give your vehicle a checkup every year, a mechanic may spot something dangerous that has to be dealt with.

14/ Anything that loads the engine reduces gas mileage; such as running the air conditioner, pulling loaded trailers, or even extra weight in the car or in the back of the truck adds up to loading. Snow piling up under fenders and in the back of trucks add extra weight to the vehicle.

15/ When starting a vehicle, only warm up 30 seconds, as this is all that is needed. In the winter you need to warm up longer to have enough heat to keep the winows free of ice and fog before driving on.
