Grocery shopping has progressed from the small corner store to the large malls. The large mall was designed after the needs of the automobiles, the mall was designed to accodate the automobile. Everyone seemed to have an automobile and could now leave the corner stores and downtown stores in search of cheaper prices. The large chain stores, bought their products in large wholesale quantities and could pass on some of the saving to the consumer. The new malls were owned and operated by single entities, who would lease space to tenants. The malls sprung up away from urban developement where land was much cheaper to obtain.
With the arrival of malls came the need for supportive equipment. The mechanical cash register was invented in 1884 and remained in use, advancing in design, right up to the electronic version in use today. The first shopping cart was fashioned out of a folding chair with added wheels and appeared around 1947, it also progressed in design, through the years. By 1960, automatic sliding doors were being installed. They were activated by pressure sesitive mats in the early years and progresses to electronic controls of today. Coupons not a new thing, they were invented five years before the turn of the century, but still holds it place in the retail world. Bar codes were in place by 1952 and its many uses, is still spreading throughout the commercial world.
Many large department type stores, such as Wal Mart and Home Depo developed alongside each other, drawing even more people to their stores. Higher gas prices and congested roadways has caused people to re-think grocery shopping. Busy life-styles, especially single families, who don't have enough hours in the day, need alternatives. Just like everything else grocery shopping has progressed from brick and mortar stores to virtual stores. All one has to do to-day is go to their computer and choose their groceries and have them home delivered.
