Have you considered getting a cat for a pet? Don’t just jump in and get any cat, the many different breeds, have different personalities and needs. Some will smother you for your attention; others will prefer to be left alone. Consider your own personality and life style and try to match it up. Are you away from home frequently? Some breeds do ok by themselves for a day or two, others don’t. If we were away for a day we would provide plenty of water and food and leave the radio on to provide company for our cats. When my brother dropped in to check on the cats, he turned off the radio on leaving. When we returned, one of the cats had an emotional problem and tried to pee in all the potted plants. This went on for a few days before she settled down. The other cats did fine. How much time to you want to spend grooming your cat, long hair cats need more grooming. Are you thinking of getting an outdoor cat or an indoor cat or a combination of the two options? Outdoor cats live an average of three years, while indoor cats live up to twenty years. If the cat is allowed outdoors they will need shots. They will quickly attain torn ears from fighting with other cats, and if they don’t become street smart in a hurry, their nine lives will be reduced in a hurry. Neighbors may not like cats and may trap them or injure them. Your relationships with your neighbor will slide downhill. I have had up to four cats at one time, one outside and three indoor. One of the indoor cats couldn’t get along with the outside cat, so I had to build a heated house in the garden shed for it. This cat adopted us as it was not fed adequately by its previous owner. Three cats, all different ages, require different care. The overweight cat needs diet food; the younger cat requires more protein. Each cat will try to compete for all the food and the stronger cat will win. Each cat will eat as much as it can. They seem to go into a survival mode. There is also much upchucking because of the gorging. Now that we are down to one cat, it is heavenly. The cat litter lasts much, much longer and there is less waste of cat food. It is wonderful to be able to keep our cat at a proper weight. We can focus our complete attention on one cat. She has a very youthful figure and likes to play. She has a very shiny fur and grooms herself extremely well. There is no longer the stresses caused by other cats in her life, she is very relaxed. When the competition is gone it is surprising how far the food goes. The reward is a very healthy cat!
