How To Repair A Water Damaged Roof

Instructions For Repairing Water Damaged Roof

The top photo shows a roof with something very wrong beneath. If you step on the shingles
in this area, it feels like your foot might go through the roof. With such a dip in the shingles,
water will pool in this area and work its way through, to the inside of the house. A heavy snow
load could cause the roof to collapse in this area. Now is the time to repair the problem,
before it gets worse.

shingles removed from roof

Start by removing all the shingles in the damaged area. Start on the very bottom of the roof,
using a wonder bar or flat pry-bar, lift the shingles enough to remove the shingle nails/staples.
Clear out the entire area where you will be replacing the damaged plywood.
Width-wise you will go from truss to truss. The plywood will be centered on the truss.
For the height, go as high as needed. Run a skill-saw across the top area, remove the nails
and lift out the old plywood.

support for joining the plywood

Make up two supports for joining the new plywood to the existing plywood at the top end.
I drilled 2 inch holes along the lenght of each support to allow air to vent into the attic.
The supports were put in place and secured to the trusses, with screws on each end.

finished shingling, job complete

The new plwood sheet was put into place and nailed down.
Tar paper was laid over the entire plywood and beneath the surrounding,
existing shingles, and stapled into place. Roof-patch tar was applied in some areas
to make a water tight seal.

finished roof

The roof was reshingled with new shingles, starting at the bottom and working towards the top.
This photo shows the completed job.
