Build a WoodenTomato Cage

Material Required

All wood pieces are 1/4 inch thick x 5/8 inches wide.
all holes are drilled slightly larger than the thickness
of the wire ties.
Copper wire with plastic coating (#10) is used, because
it is strong, and does not rust.

3 pieces 32 inches long.
3 pieces 14 inches long.
3 pieces 11-1/2 inches long.
3 pieces 8-3/4 inches long.

Birch was used to make this project.
Lay the three 32 inch support legs together and drill a hole 1/2 inch from the top, through all three pieces.
Measure from the bottom and drill a hole at six, 12, and 18 inches, through all three pieces.
Drill a hole larger than the wire in the wood supports, 1/2 inch from each end of all the remaining pieces. The tomato cage may have to be dismantled in the Fall to get the complete plant out of the cage, the wires have to slip out easily, keep in mind the wood does swell, closing the holes slightly. The complete plant can be hung in the basement so the tomatoes can fully rippen. if you have a long growing season, the tomatoes can be picked ripe, directly of the vine without dismantling the cage.

Stand up the three support legs and connect together at the top, using #10 copper ground wire (leave the plastic coating on the wire). Use wire cutters and slip joint pliers to cut, and form the copper wire.
With the three legs standing up and tied at the top, start at the bottom and add the support pieces, working your way to the top.

Tip
Plane or sand the edges of all pieces, to remove any sharpness.
